Quality and Innovation
The LS Range features the latest innovations in sound conscious design. Built-in stereo microphones offer excellent sensitivity ensuring true-to-life recordings - and their tough aluminium casings mean you minimise nasty vibration noise. Plus, each microphone point diagonally outwards giving you a wider recording area. Furthermore, it carefully designed microphone amplifier circuits prevent interference between channels, ensuring clear signal transmission.
Fantastic new editing feature
The LS-5 isn't just about great looks and fantastic audio quality; creativity and flexibility is also high on its enticing agenda. A brand new editing feature allows audio to be edited within the device - thereby achieving the end result you want quicker and more conveniently. Fast USB 2.0 connectivity is also provided, letting you hook the device up to your Windows (2000/XP/Vista) or Mac (OS 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5) computer and compatible devices.
Huge internal memory and extra long battery life
So no one's creativity is rudely curtailed, the LS-5 boasts a whopping 2GB internal memory, whilst here's the opportunity for users to expand this capacity via widely available SD and SDHC removable media. An extra long battery life ensures that this device will work as hard and for as long as you want it to do.

More recording formats, wider creative choice
The LS-5 allows users to record in ever-popular, widely compatible MP3 format for distributing and sharing music online. Different MP3 modes offer different recording times, with the option of 14 hours, 10 minutes at 320kbps, 17 hours, 45 mins at 256kbps, or 35 hours, 35 minutes at 128 kbps. PCM (WAV) format alternatively provides crisp, high quality uncompressed recording that delivers better than CD sound, with different modes offering different recording times - from 55 minutes at best quality to maximum three hours and 10 minutes.
If you need to record for even longer, WMA format is the option to go for, with up to 69 hours and 35 minutes offered at 64kbps setting. And don't forget, the above recording durations are easily expandable with the addition of an SD/SDHC card. To get approximate timings when using removable media, refer to www.olympus-europa.com

Creative opportunity doesn't just start and end within the covetable and compact dimensions of the LS-5 itself: an ever-growing range of accessories allows users to extend the boundaries of sound. Compatible devices from Olympus include the metal-bodied directional ME-31 Compact Gun Microphone with grip for attaching to tripod or microphone stand, WJ1 Wind Jammer ideally suited to outdoors recording, versatile small and lightweight ME-22 zoom microphone, ME-30W Conference Kit with two omni-directional microphones and tripods included, plus A-513 AC adapter offering mains power supply to your LS. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2012I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Olympus LS 5. It looks great in the ads.. the reviews are good, but what was it really like 'in the flesh', so to speak....Answer?...It's superb!
It's beautifully made, with an all metal aluminium outer casing - including a cast external frame - and it's finished in an attractive gun metal blue. This all surrounds a sturdy inner plastic moulding. The construction just oozes quality.
The controls are quality items, with the level adjustments suitably firm, to stop them moving about too easily. The control buttons all have a reassuring mechanical 'click' when you use them, and are again in aluminium. Not too small either.
The menu system is a delight. I'm not good with most 'layered' menus - I always forget where I am - but this is very intuitive.
The performance is excellent. With a proper separate line level input (not just an attenuated mic input) the noise floor is at -80dB. Excellent! The mic preamps are quiet - especially on the lower setting. The mic level control is an attenuator from the 'max' of each setting, so using the lower setting at max is quieter than the higher setting turned down. The internal mics are pretty good, with useful modes (including mono) to get the best from them. Works well with quality external mics, with switchable 'plug in power', for optimum use with both condenser and dynamic mics.
A switchable low cut filter allows you to remove low frequency 'rumble' if you wish.
It has a wide selection of sampling rates, at both 16 and 24 bit.
Testing the frequency response with a decent test signal gives a near perfect result.
If I have any criticism at all, it's probably because I'm getting old! The screen text is quite small... but that's cured by wearing the right glasses!
All in all, a super little unit... and now at a pretty good price too!..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 August 2012This is the second one of these we have bought and they work really well, surprised they do not come batched with an SD card but otherwise a great easy to use product with good sound quality and very clear even at low recording volume.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 January 2013As an amateur musician I like to record some of my performances. Previously I'd used a variety of recorders starting with an open-reel Revox A-77, through a Sony DAT, Sony Minidisc, as well as using a digitla audio mixing desk and feeding this through a USB port to my computer. All worked well, but were somewhat bulky and inconvenient for one reason or another.
Then I spotted this little gem. It turned out to exactly what I was looking for. Using its internal microphones one can make excellent quality recording in a wide variety of formats and sampling rates. This is not the place to list its full specs, download a product sheet from Olymus. Suffice to say that all the normal formats are covered. There is also provision for an external microphone which can be a condensor or a dynamic, the polarisation voltage can be enabled or disabled, and for binaural recodings I have successfully used the Roland in-ear binaural earphon-microphone units. There is a line input socket, and with this I can make direct audio recodings from my keyboard line output. It also doubles as an audio player. One minor drawback is that normal WMA files with ID3 tags are not displayed correctly, but then this was never designed to double as a Wallkman or Ipod.
My only criticism is that the accompanying Olympus digital editor suite that is included with the product is minimal. There is an option to purchase the full editor but sadly when I tried I was informed by Olympus that "It was not available in my area."
Overall, an excellent product, which can produce superb audio quality recordings.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2013I ordered this digital audio recorder after losing mine half way through a linguistic/accent study. This was recommended to my by a lecturer in my department and it has proved to give better acoustic quality than any I have previously used. It's great.
The battery life is fantastic too, which I initially worried about given that it just takes standard AAs. I would recommend a SDHC card with it for extra space.
Overall it has proved it's worth and I enjoy the ease and quality of use. Brilliant.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2014Good sound quality and easy to use, quite intuitive for a non techie like myself.
Use this to record EFT sessions with my clients so that they can listen back to the session.
Really like this and for the price it does the job well from across a medium size room even if you are both
a different distance away.
Easy to upload onto a pc as an MP3 and can record in different file types and different envelopes
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2013Liked it so much, have bought another for my father. Easy to operate and play back through the amplifier. Good product.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 June 2011Brilliant! Usual great Olympus attention to detail and quality. Solid but still light and well balanced. Lots of features and great quality recording.Layout of controls is very intuative and uses full size SDHC cards so easy to swap with your digital camera etc if you need more recording space + 8GB cards now "cheap as chips". Supplied software loads easily and does everything you need it to + option to upgrade if you want even more bells and whistles.
One word for the purchaser - when the small box arrives it feels very heavy and you immediately wonder how heavy the actual recorder is - panic not! The weight is the two vast multi-language tomes of instructions!!
Really good buy!

herrmannReviewed in Germany on 30 May 20135.0 out of 5 stars Perfekte Aufnahmequalität - intuitives Handling

WeslareReviewed in France on 20 January 20135.0 out of 5 stars Excellente prise de son

CorinnaReviewed in Germany on 20 May 20134.0 out of 5 stars Super! Einziges Manko: Windempfindlich
