Manufacturer's Description
Pro Lenses:In addition to a near telecentric design, the pro lenses are also dust and splash proofed to meet the special requirements of professional use. These high-performance models are robust and bright for a pros daily work.
ZUIKO DIGITAL Lenses:ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses meet the high demands of digital SLR photography providing edge-to-edge sharpness and high light utilisation.
They feature near telecentric optics for high image quality. Based on the Four Thirds standard they feature bright, compact and lightweight design.
Four Thirds Standard:Four Thirds is the answer to the uncompromising demands of professional photography. It represents a break from the past and frees digital SLR photography from the confines of conventional camera technology.
Angle of View:When you use the lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability.
When you use lenses designed for 35mm film with digital camera bodies that incorporate sensors smaller than film there is the potential problem of a loss of wide-angle capability.
Four Thirds solves this phenomenon. As the lens if always fully optimised to suit the sensor, you don't have to contend with expensive wide-angle lenses that do not attain their intended specification - the angle of view you expect is the angle of view you get.
The standard focal lens of the Four Thirds standard is around 25mm.So to compare for the 35mm format with a standard focal length of around 50mm, you have to use the factor 2 to have the angle of view compared (50mm = 100mm related to 35mm equivalent focal length).
Lens Resolution & Corner-shading:Because the medium of film is very tolerant, there was no need to equip lenses with very high resolving power in the past. But with digital sensors, this has changed.
Conventional lens systems simply do not deliver the lens resolution necessary for electronic sensors. They often have a resolution of only around 10 microns. However, because modern multi-megapixel cameras often have a pixel pitch of just 5 or 6 microns or less, overlapping and quality losses are the result. Therefore, the full theoretical performance of the sensor cannot be used. The problem is exacerbated with a greater number of pixels and a smaller sensor size.
All lenses designed for the Four Thirds standard ensure the image sensor is not left wanting. The ultra-fine resolution attained through special manufacturing processes guarantees full sensor performance.
For Edge to Edge Clarity:All Four Thirds-optimised lenses feature so-called near telecentric optics.
Due to the nature of the electronic sensor construction, image data is lost and there is a susceptibility to interference if light hits the pixels at a high angle of incidence. IT causes a situation called corner-shading, a loss in quality at the edge of the frame. This is associated particularly with cameras using full-format sensors, where lenses must spread the light widely to reach each corner.
However, the near telecentric construction of lenses optimised for the Four Thirds standard ensures light hits the sensor at right-angles. This guarantees edge-to-edge colour, clarity and brightness.
Standardisation:Four Thirds is a technological standard dedicated to the needs of digital SLR camera systems. It has been designed to maximise the performance of both image sensors and lenses. To achieve this, it sets definitive standards on three levels:Mechanical, Optical and Communication.
Mechanical Standards:The type, size and shape of the bayonet mount and mount bore are standardised to permit lens inter-changeability. Also the distance between the focal plane and the lens flange surface (flange back) and the position of the image sensor in relation to the rear of the lens have been defined.
Optical Standards: The Four Thirds Standard fixes the size of the image circle, i.e. the diameter of the circle projected by the lens onto the focal plane. The lens mount is roughly twice as big as the image circle, a feature necessary to allow the light to fall at almost perpendicular angles onto the entire image sensor via the near telecentric lens elements, thus virtually eliminating corner-shading.
A Communication Standard:The lens and body are no longer separate entities. now, through the standardised communications protocol established by Four Thirds, the two can communicate and exchange information.
An Open Standard:The Four Thirds standard has been deliberately designed as an open stnadard. That means the more body, lens and accessory manufacturers adopt the standard, the greater will be the degree of product compatibility. As a result, the range of equipment and options available to photographers will be greater
General Advantages of the Four Thirds System:No decrease in image resolution caused by inappropriate lenses - full use of the sensor's performance; No loss of wide angle capability;Significantly reduced incidence of corner-shading;Smaller, lighter lenses and bodies;Brighter lenses by approximately two f-stops with same depth of field as 35mm lenses (plus solutions to provide shallow depth of field if required);Designed to remain compatible with future sensor developments;Cross-manufacturer interchangeability;Perfect harmonisation of lens and body due to communication standard;Secure investment due to future-oriented design

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2015Spend more money on the optics than the camera body, I was told. For once I listened and have never regretted buying this excellent lens.
This lens replaced the 'kit' lens, the 14-42 mm one that was standard issue when I bought an E-500. It is the one that sits on my camera by default, has been used for pretty much anything and everything and in places from snow-capped Alpine hills to American deserts. It has given me good quality images across the whole of its range, is relatively light and so far in seven years of ownership it hasn't put a foot wrong. It is a little larger than the 14-42 mm lens, allows you to use wider apertures across its range of focal lengths, has a smooth zoom mechanism and a 67 mm filter thread.
Of course, it's not the only lens you'll ever need. The range is useful, covering wide-angle though to portrait lengths (28 mm to 108 mm equivalent) but you'll want a lens with a longer focal length too. If macro or portrait photography is your thing, you should look at the 50 mm f2.0 lens. But good though those lenses may be (and the 50 mm f2.0 is an excellent lens), they'll spend less time on your camera than this one will.
I've never regretted buying this lens and am happy recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 August 2014I have now had a chance to put the lens through its paces during a model shoot. The lens has performed very well. The price and shipping were both good.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2013I Couldn't find the original spec lens so bought this instead. Glad I couldn't find a replacement for the original. This is SO much better!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 November 2014A massive improvement over my old kit lenses.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2008I own this lens and use it alot. The images are great and it's very well put together - feels solid and robust in the hand, with a nice zoom action too. The 'double' crop factor on the four thirds means it has a very handy range, and fast, for a zoom.

TheW83Reviewed in the United States on 18 August 20085.0 out of 5 stars You don't own this yet?
I'm always hesitant about making large dollar purchases and this was no exception. I read just about every review on the web before I decided this was the best choice. The reviews were true. This lens is fantastic!
My older brothers each have a Canon Rebel XTi and a Nikon D60. Each have lenses with similar zoom range and f-stop values as this one but both of them were very impressed when they tried it out. Even complementing about how it felt better than theirs (certainly not like them to do so). I've directly compared identical subject shots between those lens/cameras and this and my e-510 and the difference is always clear. This lens consistently produces sharper and more vivid images.
When people say they keep this lens on all the time that's kind of a given. The zoom range works perfectly for every day shooting situations. But when you add in the low f-stop and quick focusing (along with the great price) then it's certainly not one you want to keep in your bag. I sure don't! I love this lens. It's another reason to buy an Olympus DSLR.

MabuseReviewed in Germany on 27 November 20055.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gutes Objektiv
J. NicolasReviewed in the United States on 14 March 20104.0 out of 5 stars Not so "like new"
Got the 14-54mm lens in time alright. It didn't look quite as "new" as the ad said it was "used-like new". It didn't look it beat up though for a used item but it was far from the other "like new " items I've ordered from you before. Scoring "new" as
a 10, "like new" should be about 9 or 9+. I rate this item 7 or 7+. Not even an 8. It didn't have a rear cap, and the hood was really scratched I had to buff it to make it look presentable. Lens cap (front) has lots of scratches too. It's really been thru good use and didn't get the right taking-care-of as was described in the ad. The lens performs well however, with a little sticky action on the zoom. Good image quality overall. Just the appearance that disappointed me.

M. Czo.Reviewed in Germany on 28 March 20124.0 out of 5 stars Olympus Zuiko an der Panasonic GH2
Dank elektronischen Adapter funktioniert alles reibungslos.
Also, per elektronischem Adapter.

chavez_1977Reviewed in Germany on 16 June 20155.0 out of 5 stars Next Level.....
