This book truly is what it says on the cover. It isn't about mirroring a style, it is about adapting an older house to accommodate modern living in a sympathetic way. It gives great advice on sourcing furniture & fabrics to add to the feel of your period. Lots of great photographs and plenty of "ooo" moments.

I love this book! Yes, a coffee table picture book, but packed full of inspirational homes that offer wonderful ideas for modern living in a period setting. When you read the text, you understand the love - and usually money - that has been lavished on these homes, and though most of us can't hope to compete with some of the grander schemes, there is so much that can be used on a smaller scale for our own design ideas. And we all need a dream! This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves old houses and conversions, and a real joy to have on the bookshelf.

I love Ros Byam Shaw. Her writing is always readable, relevant and inspiring. This particular book claims to help you 'show off the best features of a home built for another age, while adapting it for modern living'.

The book is for the coffee table so consequently has lovely large pictures. Perfect for showing up details in the many gorgeous homes featured.

It is divided into five sections: Period Piece, Urban Chic, Rustic, Recycled Spaces and Country House. Each of these has between four and six houses featured, as well as features on 'Furniture and Lighting' and 'Fabric and Finishing Touches'. All features are excellent.

The areas picked out cover all aspects of Modern Country excellently - from the traditional cottage through to converted warehouses and penthouse luxury.

It is reeeeeally lovely but doesn't quite reach the exalted spot for me. Some of the houses featured are too grand to get any real inspiration from (antique kitchen, anybody?). Drooling, though?.....Oh yes!

This is my third book by Ros Byam Shaw and I am not disappointed. Once again, a thoroughly well thought out interior book, looking at people who live in period properties and the renovations they have made to suit their lifestyles. The editorial is easy reading (as always) and the photographs are beautiful and inspiring, if you want to copy a look, it's easy to do so. A book you will want to pick up again and again. A list of architects and designers as well as antique markets and shops with telephone numbers should you want to create your own period home. I've had my book less than a week, it's permanently on my bedside for a quick read before bedtime!

My only criticism of this book is that it ended. It won't go into the tecchy detail of how to restore an old house. It's more about inspiring you to do it by showing readers a wonderful selection of places and photos. Love the fact it covers such a wide range of eras whilst keeping a running theme of good taste. It reminded me that anything is possible. Ros Shaw is one stylish author.

I bought this book because I was hoping for some material to act as inspiration for my new flat. All I really wanted was some examples of interesting interior design done well. Instead I'm subjected to rather bizarre pictures of what I can only describe as impractical show homes. The houses featured are so far removed from reality as to render most of the illustrations useless (and I'm quite pretty open minded). I half expected the next page to feature a waterslide going through the kitchen, or for all the furniture to be bolted to the ceiling. It's all very well if you're living in a crazy eco-friendly fibreglass cottage, somewhere on the South Coast, but how exactly do you get anything out of it if you live in a more conventional period house? The answer is, you don't!

My advice, look through some magazines or browse the interior photos of similar properties to your own that you can find listed on estate agents websites. It's a lot cheaper than paying for the hit-and-miss interior design books that are supposedly "good".
