I'm going to the islands in December. This book is mostly what I was looking for and it just came out a few months back (summer 2014). The author has described virtually every rock larger than a couple yards. (This can be a teeny bit tedious if reading the book all the way through and I don't think it was really neccesary). There are a few errors here and there but they are very minor. (It is the first edition after all). This author clearly has a real love for this place and the people who live there. I would have liked a somewhat less weighty book as I'm backpacking. The format is lots of (small) glossy photos of high-end resorts which I could do without but also natural places like beaches, mountains etc. He does sometimes mentions campgrounds which backpackers are usually very interested in. There is very good info on ferries and air transport. By reading this book AND downloading the Lonely Planet section on the Rykuyus I was able to get pretty much all the info I needed. There is a very good map included which was a pleasant surprise. All in all a very sincere and good effort.

No real sightseeing/ walking guides, or suggested routes or tours. No recommendations for accomodation or eateries- just basic information about each island/ transport and a few sights per place...more technical!

It did not provide sufficient detail and there was no information about practicalities (hiring a car, where to stay, eating out, etc.)
