Product Description
'Officium' is one of the iconic albums. It has sold around 1½ million copies, and is still in the charts as one of the top 20 best-selling classical albums of the past decade, two decades after its 1994 release.

"What is this music?" Fundamentally, it's an exploration of what happens when an improvisatory instrumental voice (saxophone) is placed into the world of early vocal music, which has elements of both improvisation and formal structure. In reality, it's an adventure in which the four male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble travel the 14th and 15th-century territory of Morales and Dufay, visit the 12th-century Pérotin and roam even earlier ages of plainchant, accompanied by the always sensitive and tasteful, often astonishing, saxophone improvisations of jazz master Jan Garbarek. Sometimes, these new melodies simply accompany; sometimes they transform the common--a routine minor chord, for instance--into a sublime, indescribable moment. The answer to the above question is easy, but it's different for each listener. --David Vernier

I could not believe the melody which unfolded the first time I listened to the Hilliard Ensemble accompanied by Jan Garbarek and the way in which they were able to complement their different styles and medium to harmonise so incredibly well. I like to think that I enjoy a quite diverse selection of music and have even tapped my toes to some of the sounds contained on my son's "now 89" album, but once again, I have discovered that there is so much more to appreciation of music which does not belong a a particular genre.
There are some really nice reviews regarding this album, which are far better than mine, all I can say is that I regret waiting 20 years to listen to it and will never forget the haunting melody which accompanied the introduction via "Front Row".
If you have doubts regarding whether to purchase or not, search the BBC archives for "Front Row" on 14th November 2014 and listen to how they first met. Breathtaking!
