The Official Sloane Ranger Diary: The First Guide to the Sloane Year
Top customer reviews
So read between the lines of both books, put aside "Hooray Henry" (of the bread-roll throwing ilk) and what do you find? Decent people; people who gave back to society. Sloane Rangers emerged, circa 1850, from the then new mercantile middle-class. They lasted until Mrs Thatcher - with her belief that (like her) anyone could do anything and achieve the stars - ushered in the age of the "Yuppie" and self-absorbed "Essex Boy." But who can fault the Iron Lady's meritocratic aspirations, (and, later, New Labour's) IF the leaders invited to take the Sloane's place had the culture (small "c"), good manners, kindness and self-effacing dignity which prioritised the fundamental Sloane mantra that: WE is always so much better than ME.
Henry and Caroline's world, amusingly chronicled in this book, WAS primarily one of social responsibility, moral prudence, family values and care for others (despite what Guardian readers may yearn to believe). Sadly, the baby went out with the bathwater when the Sloane was deposed.
Not only for brittish sloanes, but also for the cousins from the continent!
Experience here what it really means to be brittish or to be educated.
It advocates the good old conservative lifestyle and explains why the
different fieldsports disciplines are so important!
