This is an extremely well written account of how the Mafia/Cosa Nostra and other like organisations came to wield power, both in Europe and the US. Much of the power granted was enabled by corrupt governments not dealing with criminal behaviour. In Italy only Mussolinni was able to curtail Mafia activities. This he achieved by slaughtering wholesale, groups within Calabria and Sicily. Unfortunately the war brought an end to his activities when a naive America (Who should have known better with their experiences of the 20s & 30s) handed the power directly back to the Mafia via Lucky Luciano in order to defeat the Fascists, thus condemning Italy, parts of Europe and the US to embedded and endemic crime. I found the book all too short but an extremely good read.

I bought this after reading the "Inspector Montalbano" books. Well written in a style easy to read, clearly explains the beginning of the Mafia and how it emigrated to the US and found a home with great scope for all its "business ventures".

I needed a book that connected America to Sicily and beyond, it did, perfectly!! Have you ever been to favignana and wondered how many retired Mafioso live there?
