This beautifully created album is a masterpiece of instrumentation. Beautifully played by magician and maestro Vangelis, the listener is transported to a world of mermaids and fishes swimming freely with seagulls flying overhead. I just love the way the tracks are linked by waves crashing and rolling into the next track. It's full of majesty and Vangelis uses the keyboards and synthesizers to great effect with waves and seagulls mixed with synth strings and great music. A great companion for when you just want to relax and chill out. I love this album because it is so seductive.

I generally don't think of Vangelis as writing music that I'd call fun or romantic or even lighthearted, although I do find his music beautiful and moving. I love Oceanic because it really conjures up the images of mermaids, of deserted islands, of the tropics, basically all the good stuff one associates with the sea. I wouldn't necessarily say it was sailing music, if that makes any sense, however. But if you're looking for something to take you away to sunnier climes when it's dreary outside, this cd is for you.

I bought this CD back in 1997 without knowing anything about it other than knowing a number of Vangelis' other works most notably 1492, Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire. I can quite honestly say I fell in love with this CD from the moment I first heard it. It is quite simply wonderful. An ideal distraction from the stresses of everyday life.

It's so hard to find "chill out" music of any substance. Vangelis always succeeds where others lack any musicality at all. You can't simply dismiss the guy as a purveyor of film music.
This album is Vangelis in his "layed back" mode. Highlights around track 4. Spanish Harbour. Definitely a CD to put on and make love to, but stands up for a serious listen too.
Treat yourself and have a look at "Voices" by Vangelis too.

On first listen, I would have probably given this disc 3 or 4 stars, but on subsequent listens, I've discovered such a lot more in the music and have found it easily worthy of the full 5 stars.

The opening track, "Bon Voyage", is one of my favourites on the album, with a sumptuous orchestral sound, reminiscent of the Hans Zimmer score to the film "Paperhouse" (particularly the scenes set in Devon towards the end of the film).

Track 2, "Siren's Whispering" features some lovely voices and harp glissandi; my only criticism of this track is that it's perhaps a bit long, and some of the other sounds and rhythms on the track are almost a bit "Bontempi-organ" ish at times, to my ears.

Track 3, "Dreams of Surf" opens with some gorgeous piano arpeggios, perhaps reminiscent of the Bach piece from the "Well Tempered Klavier" that Gounod used as the basis for his "Ave Maria"; this is joined later on in the track by a flute, giving a mood reminiscent of part of the second movement of Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2. To me, this track could have done with being a bit longer; it has some lovely themes and almost seems as though it's over too soon.

Track 4, "Spanish Harbour"'s highlight is the gorgeous guitar, giving it the Spanish feel; it's more up-tempo than the previous tracks on the album, with a "chillout" type beat, whilst still being fairly laid back. There's echoes of some of Vangelis's earlier albums if you listen carefully though, e.g. there's a "screechy" sound at around 4 minutes 10 seconds in the track which could have come straight out of "Heaven and Hell", and some of the bass in the track is reminiscent of Albedo 0.39.

Not the best compilation from Vangelis in terms of involvement.by a listener. Tracks just do not "excite".
Amazon's presentation does not help with clicks and bangs if downloaded between each "track" compared with ITunes who leave a "gap" between tracks which integrate smoothly.

Has to be 5 stars as Vangelis certainly knows how to make the listener go off in a sea of dreams. Listening to this cd makes you think of faraway islands in the Tropics and the soothing sound of waves crashing on the shore just brilliant. From the great beginning through to the end this is a musical journey not to be missed, may not be as good as his other works but still a great listen.

I heard this piece some time ago in a retial environment and asked what/who's work it was. No one knew.
I found this on Amazon by accident while rambling through Jon Vangelis. Some of his work is truly
excellent. I was delighted to download this and enjoy the sheer quality of the recording. Nice one Jon,
nice one Amazon. Happy new year to you all.
