I read this in one sitting. Completely absorbing. I was guessing until the last few pages. You can really feel the pull between Alexis and Laura but your heart would break for Simon. Ryan wasn’t a very likeable character. This is a story with only a few main characters. Lots of characters in the background. I would recommend to everyone.

Well I’ve just finished this book on a friend’s recommendation, all 354 pages of it, in just over 24 hours! Which is not something I often manage nowadays as books usually send me to sleep within a few pages. Hugely enjoyable and easy to read. But just as importantly for me as something of a literary snob, I also very much enjoyed the writing style and skill of the book’s structure. It deftly switches between first person narrators and timelines without ever being confusing. Wonderfully evocative of beautiful Edinburgh, while sections describing life as a teenager took me right back to my own (not always pleasant) school experiences. It teases the reader with clues as to “whodunnit” without ever being too obvious. Just enough to keep you hooked!

Perfect holiday reading - or at any other time of year. And even my husband, usually a consumer of serious non-fiction only, is currently engrossed in it. I reckon this has Hollywood blockbuster written all over it.

Delighted to have discovered this author and look forward to novel number 2!

This is the tale of a young Edinburgh mother with a loving husband and family who meets unexpectedly with an old flame from her schooldays and allows her obsession with him to bring it all to ruin. Her increasingly unsuccessful attempts to conceal the affair and maintain her relations with her still much-loved family and her job are finally frustrated when her lover is found dead and she finds herself a suspect. The guilt and shame she feels throughout are a major feature of the narrative.

The plot switches between three separate timelines spanning about ten years and is set in modern suburban Edinburgh whose beauty and variety is lovingly described. The principal characters are complex, believable and occasionally likeable. It all fits together in the end but I would defy anyone to predict the final outcome.

This is a good story beautifully written and well told.

I find books that entitle the chapters with dates very annoying. Is the date pre the event that is referred to, the date of the event or post event? It’s not always easy to remember. This book went back and forth and was really long winded for the story it was telling. I didn’t find it page turning or full of suspense - just glad to reach the end.

A suspenseful, tense thriller that gripped me from the beginning. The interwoven timelines drew me in and kept me engaged right up to the heart-wrenching conclusion. I stayed up very late to finish it as I just had to see how it ended. I especially enjoyed the well crafted, passionately flawed characters and the vivid descriptions of a dark & beautiful Edinburgh. Very much looking forward to reading more from Liza North!

Stunning cover, and the multiple timelines mean you know what happens just not who….read it over 2 evenings gripping and has you reading just one more chapter, until 10 more have gone…. Clearly the author knows Edinburgh well it is so well depicted and comes alive from the words.
Despite knowing what happens you still kind of want a happy ending…alas it fails on that count…
