Maybe that is understandable because the main character, brilliantly played by Jean Dujardin, is a "politically un-correct" version of James Bond-007 as played in the 60's by Sean Connery.
This is much funnier as a spy spoof than "Austin Powers" and "Get Smart" (the film). OSS 117 manages to make ethnic jokes that are totally unacceptable these days, making fun of jews, muslims, blacks, orientals, the French, Americans, Brazilians, Germans, Nazis, hippies... basically, he spares no one!
Perhaps some distributors were afraid people might be offended... I found that since everybody was hit, it was all very egalitarian!
The reconstitution of the 60's was quite impressive: the cars, costumes, set decorations, hair-styles... so perfect it was hard to remind ourselves we were not actually watching a 60's film. And it was great to laugh out loud at a comedy that did not need to resort to bodily fluids in an attempt to be funny!
