"Ordnance Survey Explorer Map # 461: Orkney - East Mainland, South Ronaldsay, Shapinsay, & Kirkwall" covers that portion of the Orkneys clustered around the former Royal Navy wartime anchorage of Scapa Flow. Scapa Flow, the sheltered waters located between the "Mainland" and the islands of Hoy and South Ronaldsay, were a principal base of the Royal Navy during the two World Wars. Mainland is the largest island of the Orkneys and includes Kirkwall, the largest town. Kirkwall has the ferry docks and most of the facilities, along with an ancient cathedral and bishop's palace. Mainland is connected to South Ronaldsay via a pair of bridges and the island of Lamb Holm. Lamb Holm has an improvised chapel constructed by Italian POWs.
The back of this map sheet covers the pretty islands of Burray and South Ronaldsay, connected to Mainland by road and bridge, dotted with ancient ruins, and surrounded by Scapa Flow and the North Sea. Several smaller islands, reachable by boat, are also included on this mapsheet.
At a 1:25,000 scale and featured a multicolored presentation, this Ordnance Survey Explorer Map is very highly recommended to those fortunate enough to have the opportunity to explore the Orkneys, whether by automobile, by bicycle, or on foot.
