Perhaps inevitably, the long awaited part 2 of Oro, Opus Alter, is initially a bit of an anticlimax. It is more of the same, massive and relentless if a more 'basic' outing, and without the addictive little repetitive melody hook which permeated part 1, Opus Primum, or seemingly any equivalent: more towards spaced riffage with trademark 'alien' noise textures.
Obviously as part 2 is less familiar than part 1 it will take time for the 2 parts to be heard as a whole - this perhaps questions the wisdom of such delayed 2 part releases - why not put a double CD out straight off?
However, this CD alone still has the power to curdle the brain in a most satisfactory manner; this is a band on top of its game - heavy beyond credibility, dense and complex within a simple formula, and worthy of repeated listening - so just get the two CDs together (or, who knows it may appear as a double at some point) and go where they send you. Just don't plan on doing much for a while afterwards...

The second part of ORO truly completes this epic. It picks up exactly where Opus Primus left off then takes on it's own life. Obscenely heavy in places that then lead to transcending moments of cosmic exploration, I would highly recommend this album to all metal and doomers everywhere.

You know an album is special when you consistently have two thoughts after finishing it. 1.) Everything seems so quiet given how loud you've been playing it, and 2.) you want to listen to the whole thing again. Oro: Opus Alter is that album for me. I got turned on to Ufomammut while exploring the slow-burn side of doom with acts like Sunn 0))) and Sleep. Ufomammut gave me something different. They don't use heaviness for low-frequency relaxation. Though it relies greatly on repetition and atmosphere, the music utilizes tightly-wound rhythms that push the sound forward. Alter's 43 minutes of listening time fly past; nothing feels unnecessary or overindulgent. The fuzz effects, crunchy riffs, sci-fi synth noises and voice-over samples are in the vein of Electric Wizard. Yet, Ufomammut makes their own scene with massive, joyous interludes. Alter hooked me from the first listen, but it just gets better with return trips.
