I feel sorry for many of the UK reviewers on Amazon, as seeing all the negative comments initially put me off buying this unit, but when I saw some positive comments on Amazon US, I thought I'd give it a try. Boy am I glad I did, as it works brilliantly, with no noisy fan at all.

Just to clarify my comments, I'm using Win7pro 64bit and keep the OS and MoBO drivers up to date. I have many USB2 and USB3 outlets on my PC, which is a black tower and this box looks perfect resting on top of it.

Upon delivery, I used my Inateck USB3 SATA Docking Station (also from Amazon, but sadly no longer available) to format 4 x 3TB Seagate HDD's, and assigned them as Drive "W","X","Y","Z" then just mounted them into the 4 bays, plugged the unit into one of my USB3 sockets and turned the power on. After approx 20secs with all the blue LED's lit up, the 4 HDD's were ready for use - with no hassles whatsoever! Incidentally, the bi-colour LEDs are blue when disk is idle and change to red when the drive is accessed, nice feature. I have since mounted new drives straight into the unit (not hot swap) and Windows recognises this, asks to initialise (GPT) and then format the HDD as per the norm.

I've been using it for a year now with no problems and get excellent file transfer speeds, even when copying files from (say) drive "W" to drive "Y". I've also had other external HDD's plugged into my other USB3 ports and then copied files back and forth between them with no speed problems etc. I've since bought more HDD's and exchanging them is no problem (not hot swopping, of course) and this really helps with organising all my backups etc.

Some reviewers have mentioned fan noise - not a problem here compared to my nVidia card fan.

I had a few SATA HDD left around from previous PCs and for some time I have wondered about purchasing something that allowed me to have a large storage capacity while also giving the option to back up my data. I was already keeping an eye on a few DAS (Direct-Attached Storage) products and this ORICO unit at £219 looked like a great candidate. However I was initially a bit concerned with some of the reviews left by some sellers and therefore I spent a bit of time researching the product before purchasing it.
Now that I have bought this unit I feel really pleased with it and even if it is already fully working with the Hard Drives I had around I have decided to start saving for some new disks.
My plan is to finally buy at least 3 identical new HDD of around 2 Tb each to then fully benefit from the RAID option of this unit.

But one step at the time.

This unit has five hot-swappable bays and can support individual drive, RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 10 operation with a USB 3.0 interface. The unit itself is stylish and elegant in its aesthetic, featuring a matte black curved aluminium outer shell, and elevated rubber feet at the base.
The front shows the five ventilated flip open bays, each with their own activity LED indicator and a single power button. The bays themselves have a simple security lock with 2 keys provided.

Opening the bays and peeking inside, I can see the use of a PCB back-plate to connect with the drives, which slide in “tool-less” and in the easiest way I have ever seen. Metal “rails” guide the HDD that is then held in place with a tiny tab at the end and the spring tension of the cover pushing against the front edge of the drive.

It's a solidly built piece of kit. Feels sturdy and the replacing drives is very simple requiring no tools. Drives just slide in and slide right back out once the doors are opened. It also includes locking doors to prevent any accidental ejecting of the drives if that's a concern for some.

You've got the option of RAID 0, RAID 1, NORMAL (JBOD) and BIG (JBOD but seen as a single drive by your OS).
Choosing which mode to run is done via dip switches on the back. Initially worried that if they were accidentally moved the data would be compromised, however, you must switch the dip switches to NORMAL mode, then press and hold the set button, then select your new mode and press set again to change the settings. So even if you accidentally get as far as switching the dips and pressing and holding the set button, you'll end up in JBOD with all of your data. Nothing to worry about there.

Speeds from the unit are good. I have two 3TB WD Red drives inside the enclosure. RAID 1 read and write are 150MB/s. RAID 0 is 180MB/s write and 230MB/s read. Which is pretty quick! I have mine configured to RAID 1 for redundancy on Mac OSX.

Drives are not encrypted and readable by any dock once removed from the enclosure. Which is exactly how it should be.

Lastly, the unit is not quiet, but also not that loud. On the desk beside me, it's a little too loud but I think if it was a little further away it would be fine.
The fan inside my particular enclosure has on more than one occasion made a grinding sound, which makes me think that there might be a bearing loose as a light tap on where the fan lives seems to knock it back to it's usual gentle hum.
