Impressive bit of kit

I bought this PSU to replace the 460Watt power supply as supplied in my dell XPS 8300 which I purchase on September 2011.

The box was organised with the contents well packaged; the instruction manual is incredibly lacking but if you use the OCZ website you'll find all the information you'll need. Note that there is no information about how to install; this is different depending on your case. If you need information on the XPS case I would be happy to send photos to assist.

When installing I replaced the PSU without connecting the extra cables; this I found was far easier with the restricted space. The cables are excellent quality and more robust in quality and firmer than the old PSU. I've run several POST tests to ensure the power supply works and no problems detected.

I would purchase this item for other PC's and would recommend to friends and family.

Short ATX cables, developed a ticking noise aftrer a week

If you have a case that top mounts your PSU and doesn't have great cable management than this may be a five star product for you. It's not a top-end PSU but at this price it's very attractive for mid-level builds. Very quiet too, unless it develops the ticking problem (covered later in this review).

My Fractal Design Arc has lots of holes in the motherboard tray for cable management, and so a semi-modular PSU was probably a bit of a waste.

When mounted at the bottom of the case the length of the 8 pin CPU power cable is too short by a few inches to be routed behind the motherboard tray and back out at the top where the 8 pin motherboard connector is. 46cm isn't really an acceptable length for that cable. It ended up routed over the GPU until I get a AATX12V 8 Pin Power Extension Cable or similar.

The PSU developed an annoying ticking noise (like a clock) after a week. Googling "modxstream ticking" revealed that it was a reasonably common problem. Installing the PSU the other way up seems to have solved my problem.

The CPU fan is quiet once the ticking problem was eliminated. I don't have any other PSU to compare it too, but I doubt they get a lot quieter than this.

Finally, whilst none of the above points individually are show-stoppers, taken together I'm deducting two stars. I will not replace this PSU unless the ticking noise comes back, but if I was at the shopping stage again I'd be looking at the bottom end of the Seasonic range (or a rebrand) instead.

Short 4/8 pin CPU power leads

This is a good quality PSU but its let down by the very short CPU power leads. The short leads cause a few problems with large cases that bottom mount the PSU, fitting them into my Antec 1200 case was a nightmare and resulted in very ugly cable management.

The rest of the PSU and its modular leads where fine though. The main 20+4 pin lead and the CPU 4/8 pin leads are not modular and are fixed into the case, everything else is modular and optional.

It comes with,

2x SATA power, three connectors on each cable.

2x 4 pin MOLEX, two connectors on each cable.

2x PCI-E power cable (one lead is a 6+2 with the extra pins being breakaway allowing easy fitting into a 6 pin PCI-E slot).

This PSU has enough oomph to run at least a single GTX 560ti but I doubt it would run two.

I recently bought this PSU having had one cheap generic 650w simply blow up after 12 months in my relatively modest home-built system, and a replacement 550W ACE cheapy (about £20) showing signs of voltage delivery fluctuations causing the system simply to shut down, so I decided on the OCZ based on price (more than I'd wanted to pay but I'm a bit of a cheapscate), external techy reviews of its quality & so on.

It arrived this morning 24 hours after ordering on free delivery (well done again, Amazon)& it's now happily powering the pc I'm writing the review on, so I must have done something right.

First impressions are very favourable, as naturally I can't comment on its reliability yet. First of all it's beautifully packaged in a very swish box and is EXTREMELY heavy & built like a tank & comes with a new 1.5m. kettle-type UK power lead, which is always a nice idea, & a variety of extremely robust internal cables, covered in tight dark mesh sleeving (improves case airflow) & housed in an extremely dinky large zippered black nylon bag branded OCZ, which I think I'll use to take my toothpaste & shaving stuff on holiday, it's so nice. I'll leave the extra emergency cables OCZ kindly provide in a drawer.

The unit oozes quality & robustness, unlike my previous PSUs & the big 14cm fan is whisper-quiet yet sucks (blows?) like an aircon unit.

As it's a modular PSU it doesn't have a gigantic fixed set of connecting spaghetti-like cables, just the 24-pin mb plug, auxiliary mb plug & something else, which I've forgotten, but anyway, all the other PCI express cables, molex connectors, SATA cables etc., plug in separately where needed, which minimises the number of extraneous wires clogging up the inside of your case & making it look like your granny's knitting basket. Nice idea, which also means that if you need to add another HD or two or a Crossfire/SLI extra graphics card later, you can do.

I found the cable lengths to be more than adequate to reach my ATX board connectors & the other bits, & the tight, rounded cable profiles make the inside of my pc look much more professional. Shame to put the side back on, actually, but there you go.

A very nice solidly-engineered piece of kit.
