After the mediocre "The healer" I approached the second release on Dr Lonnie's own label with a few reservations. What appears on paper to be just a re-hash of a bunch of old tunes actually turns into a HOT and very enjoyable session indeed. Recorded "Live in the Studio" with an eight piece band makes some of these old tunes really cook.
"Psychedelic Pie" is for me the pick of the album which is nothing less than a blistering piece of Afro Funk. Most of the tunes benefit from the larger ensemble and the excellent live sound adds further excitement to the mix.
With each disc weighing in at fifty odd minutes each there is much good music to be heard.
We can forgive Lonnie for the mediocre offering last time out but he has pulled out all of the stops for this one.
My faith in the doctor has been restored.

2.0 out of 5 stars In The Beginning 6 Jun. 2014

Kind of disappointing, had heard one tune on WBGO, and liked it, but most of the compositions and vocals are lackluster....

5.0 out of 5 stars In The Beginning -Dr Lonnie Smith 24 Nov. 2013

Dr Lonnie shows that he is the Master of the Hammond B3. This double CD features some of his best loved original tunes, from his early career, many of which were originally recorded on albums no longer available. He is accompanied by a tight 7 piece band and the live recording gives it a great feel! I've loved hearing these old tunes again. They still sound exciting and dynamic!

5.0 out of 5 stars I need the Doctor 12 Nov. 2013

Well, it took a while to get it with some delay, first expected 1 cd turned out eventually 2 cds - some 2 hours of live in studio music. Though a digipack there is a great inlay explaining it all we have old songs from 60s Blue note era redone with Ed Cherry (check out his own LPs with the Doctor). You have to seat and relax and put it on. Unbelieveable. I consider myself fortunate to see the Doctor himself some 10 years ago in Warsaw in Poland where he performed with fantastic guitaris Mark Whitfiled (check out his credits on 2 cds with JIMMY Smith at Verve) and a lady at the drumms interuppted by violin player Polish Dudziak man. I was just 10 meters away watching the Doctor played. Fantastic. One question why not issue it on LPs? It is a milestons like other Blue note Lps and Joey Defrancesco records.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lonnie's got it! 15 July 2014
By Tito Dalporto - Published on Amazon.com

Lonnie got it right. He played what he does best and let his years of experience come through in his playing. His back up musicians and soloists fitted in seamlessly with his music. The album was raw and earthy and smokin'.

very ingenious piece of work, since Afrodisia.. I will spread the word that Dr. Lonnie Smith is back and kicking.
