Brilliant. Positively brilliant!

This was a very enjoyable read, with rich, intense characters and enticing dialogue. A beautiful, original story that takes the reader from childhood innocence to human barbarity at its utmost worst. While at the same time still remaining faithful to its ethnic and cultural roots. The novel maintains a core central theme throughout but is multi-layered with many subplots, often probing and invoking the reader’s own philosophy.

I was offered the book by a friend and was completely engaged from start to finish. It is so well written with such vivid emotions that I was rendered happy, sad, thrilled and shocked, as I followed the lives of Kareem, Meena, their families and their friends.

Would I recommend the novel? Absolutely, one hundred percent!

Not since I read the ‘Kite Runner’ have I been so honestly engrossed in a book.

What a fantastic read!!

O.R. Nizam Road is the first novel written by Ash C. Milan.
It is a profoundly moving book, telling the story of two main characters, Kareem and Meena, as their lives develop against the backdrop of the independence movement in East Pakistan in the early 1970s.
The novel traces the childhoods of Kareem and Meena, both in Pakistan and in England. The portrayal of Kareem, coping as he does with a disability from childhood, is written in a sensitive manner, with the writer managing to develop a character who is likeable and whose future the reader takes an interest in. As the relationship between Kareem and Meena develops through adulthood, the reader is taken on a journey of much turbulence, which corresponds with the bloody birth of the nation now known as Bangladesh. And although parts of the book are somewhat harrowing, this is essential to the understanding of what was suffered by the people of Bangladesh on their road to independence.
A well-written first novel, O.R. Nizam Road captures a period of history which, though gruesome, is both moving and inspiring. Those of you who enjoyed The Kite Runner will also enjoy this book.

Beautifully, vividly, written love story that tells the tale of childhood unrequited love that crosses cultures and two continents. Fate, family, politics and war finally bring the two young lovers together only to be thwarted by the changing politics, violence, and oppression that created Bangladesh. This colourful, authentic story with characters you just fall in love with, will explain the history of how and why what is now modern day Bangladesh had to emerge from the repressive forces of East Pakistan. I am proud to say my father and uncles fought for Bangladesh independence and why I was so happy to have this momentous and often forgotten historical event brought back to life by Ash C. Milan.
