First up, I'll address the gaming side of it. It's pretty good. I've signed up for online gaming from Geoforce and it streams your games brilliantly. For me though, the selection is limited. That's mainly down to me only liking certain types of games. Driving, Golf, Puzzle types. There's loads of the "run around, search, fight, solve clues" type games, ie, Tomb Raider and the Batman Arkham games. They are all included here. Big selection just all, to me, a little samey. You do have a choice from Playstore but you don't get full access to them. Only games that Nvidia think will suit the box.I found this a little strange. You can install some more from the web based Playstore, giving you more choice. On a 4K tv, the games all looks spot on. I'm getting right into Asphalt 8, a massive game that is actually free from Playstore.
From the streaming side I'm a little disappointed. No All4, ITV Hub, My5, UKTV play at all. Just not supported. Ridiculous. (read edit at the bottom)
BBC iPlayer is there with Amazon Video and Netflix all there and 4K ability on those two. You can also get Ultraflix, which is a pay per view 4K movie app. The big point for me was SPMC (Kodi). Works like a dream. Blisteringley fast. And allows a 4K GUI with full access and viewing of any 4K stuff you might be able to find on it. Another buying point for me was the Shields ability to passthrough not only Dolby Digital (which the Amazon can only do) but DTS, Dolby True HD, DTS-MA and all other audio formats too.
The two controllers all work very well with plenty of battery life though I use my Logitech Hub for normal control of the tv streaming stuff.
Edit TWO WEEKS LATER
Right, after some searching I found a work around for the missing main catch up services.
Using a website called apk mirror, I downloaded the apks for ITV player, all4 and my5. (You can either use a browser on the shield or I downloaded them on my phone, transfered them to my pc and then transferred again to my USB stick, then plugged into the shield Using the Shields es file Explorer they all installed and work fully. Unofficial shield apps don't show up on the home page, they are saved in an app called sideload launcher.)
However, they are the mobile versions so all the interfaces are in portrait mode and you'll need an "air remote" to access navigate them. But, when they play content they switch to landscape and all play perfectly. Live, catch up and boxsets.
I have used a website to adapt the apps so they appear and launch from the home page. I've submitted a photo. You'll need some patience but for any official app it is do-able. Enjoy. It, now is the best android streamer!
Also the on-board memory is insufficient to playback a movie without Plex complaining it has run out of storage. Due to its buffering strategy you can get round this by stopping and restarting the playback. A more sensible solution is to add an SD card and configure it in Android as "extended storage", but the device doesn't work properly unless you do this.
Easy to set up and configure though, and very unobtrusive in use. The touch-sensitive remote takes a bit of getting used to (especially when you accidentally stroke it and the volume goes up to neighbour-blasting levels) but once you're trained it's fine.
Secondary reasons were the Chromecast was becoming unreliable and the added bonus on being able to stream PC games (as I have an Nvidia GFX card) to the TV (in reality I'm going to have to go hard wired as my current setup isn't cutting it).
Overall all its a relatively cheap, responsive media device / server with most of the perks of any Android based bit of kit albeit with alot more horsepower in the GFX department (Nintendo Switch has the same chipset - maybe tweaked).
Only thing stops this from getting a perfect rating is not so much the device itself and probably more to do with either the slow pace of Android TV development (streaming apps for phone and tablets aren't necessarily supported on Android TV) and/or the Devs for said Apps not porting an Android TV version of their software from the get go.
That said most of the key Apps I enjoy are covered and there's a very active community dedicated to integrating content you've probably never even heard of via media server software such as Kodi.
Following my bad experience with the unreliability of Minix I thought to have a change by trying a different make. Having read the various reviews for Nvidia Shield TV l was convinced to have a closer look at the product. The price was a bit high compared with other products but I don't mind paying a bit extra for higher quality, specification and most importantly reliability. And so I have purchased one from Amazon which arrived the following day.
On opening the product immediately gave the impression of high quality. Powering the unit worked immediately and confidently out of the box without needing to read the instructions. With lots of memory, a very fast processor and high standard of performance it is unbeatable. I don't play games so I don't have any need for the controller which is also build to a high standard. But the remote control satisfies adequately my video needs. I comes complete with Kodi which performs very smoothly without jerkiness.
Some day manufacturers will build android TV boxes to this very high standard set by Nvidia Shield TV. But until then the product is unbeatable for the price, quality and performance.
