This production is based on choreography created in 1934 by Vainonen, a Soviet-era choreographer, and design by Virsaladze, which is traditionally performed in St. Petersburg. There is something authentic about it. It is a charming production without resorting to gimmicks and idiosyncrasies.

The principal roles in Act 2 are performed by a handsome couple - Alina Somova (Masha the Princess) and Vladimir Shklyarov (the Nutcracker Prince). The role of young Masha is performed by a student from the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Many students from the Academy also participate in this production. They certainly know the work very well since they put on performances themselves at the Mariinsky Theatre every winter.

Valery Gergiev - not usually known as a ballet conductor - does a good job here, bringing out the beauty of the score and supporting the dancers.

I watched a 3D version of this production at a cinema a few years ago when it was first released, but was not particularly impressed by it. But, now I am happy to watch this 2D version on DVD.

Not one for writing reviews, I was so disappointed with the product that I felt it worth the caveat to prospective buyers. I bought this having watched the BBC Swan Lake from the Mariinsky with Gergiev which I thoroughly enjoyed, though some of the 'fancier' camerawork - pulling out as dancer moves upstage, zooms at the expense of the bigger picture that the theatre-goer would get, too much upper torso alone - left me a little dissatisfied. Here it is awful -at least a third - probably more - of it concentrates on the upper torso of the dancers, usually only panning out towards the end of a scene and even then remaining too close. The corps de ballet and the bigger picture are generally sacrificed. I felt the whole thing was far too close. Agreeing with other reviewers - the colour was not great (non-blu-ray format) and the music - with all due respect to Gergiev and the orchestra - was somehow lacklustre . Having said all that, I did enjoy the children dancers of whom there are many in the productioin and my own children - ages 6,8 and 10 enjoyed it a lot. Clearly this is very subjective but I won't be watching it again in a hurry.

It's ok for such price. It was one of the cheapest "Nutcrackers". But it's very annoying that most of the time you can't see dancers' feet. Few customers mentioned it and I thought what picky customers they were. I didn't realize that it really spoils the pleasure of watching this ballet.

The ballet (choreography, dancers performance) is nice and quite well studied in detail, although a bit conservative and sometimes monotonous. The filming of the scenes, especially in the first part, is too close and reduces the overall impression. Pleasant to watch but nothing more.

If you want to experience a truely Russian ballet this is the one for you! I've watched the DVD several times for that reason. You feel as if you are in Tsarist Russia because of the costumes, scenary, and orchestration. The dancing is superb too. Highly recommended.

The performance itself was excellent. One of my favorite. Really magical! However, since it was bought as a present I was disappointed with the packaging. It doesn't come in a proper DVD case, only a flimsy cardboard case, not even a smart one.

I had a previous recording by the same company when it was the Kirov. THe production has been streamlined and the company looks as if it has fewer members but the dancing is wonderful and the camera work and orchestra are excellent
