The premise? "Number one songs and songs from number one albums". The reality; a repackaged ABBA Gold with three substitutions.

Unfortunately, although the three replacement songs are catchy and fun, two of ABBA's very best songs ("Lay All Your Love On Me" and "Thank You For The Music") have been lost. Worse, it still doesn't include Gold's only serious omission, "The Day Before You Came".

If you're considering the 2CD special edition of "Number Ones", bear in mind that Disc 2 is just a mish-mash of album tracks. (Some are excellent, but you may as well buy the original albums.) And it still doesn't include the missing songs above.

My advice? If you want a single-disc compilation of the very best ABBA hits, buy "ABBA Gold".

For little more, the double-CD "ABBA: The Definitive Collection" includes *all* the songs on Gold, plus lesser-known classics. Even with a couple of ropey early singles near the start (the tracks being ordered by date), it's definitely the best ABBA compilation. Both this and "Gold" are still readily available through Amazon.

The music is still 5 star material... but as a slightly inferior and totally pointless rehash of ABBA Gold, "Number Ones" really doesn't deserve that much.

It seems to be fashionable to release albums of worldwide number one hits. The Beatles started the trend in 2000.

So 2006 provided Universal with the opportunity to give Abba the Number Ones treatment. Trouble is, most of the tracks are already on Abba Gold. As other reviews have stated, three tracks from Abba Gold have been removed as they weren't No. 1 hit singles anywhere. Of the "No. 1's" that have replaced them, only Summer Night City was a Top 5 hit in the UK. The other two barely touched the Top 40 (Ring Ring No. 32 and I Do, I Do etc No. 38) but obviously did reach the summit elsewhere.

If Abba Gold didn't exist, then this compilation may have had a point, but as it stands, it has no purpose. If you want the big UK hits, get Abba Gold. If you desire all the singles, invest in The Definitive Collection. Don't buy this one.

These thirty-one ABBA's songs represent the best and you probably won't tire of them. It is amazing that four Swedes (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as writers and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog as the main singers) could take such simple English clichés and turn them into pop music magic. Despite sometimes maddeningly simple lyrics, the song arrangements were unnervingly catchy and the multi-level layered compositions are fascinating. The keyboards and synthesizers were used in some of the more ingenious ways during the seventies to produce that unmistakable ABBA sound. The energy and nearly anthemic enthusiasm emanating from each song marked them all as instant classics, no matter how jaded or cynical the listener. It is doubtful if you read the song list here that you would not know the melody. The one ironic thing about this groups phenomenal success, is that of over 400 million album sales, they only had one number one hit in the US - "Dancing Queen" - but when you look at world-wide markets, each one of these songs hit the number one spot at some time. That's quite an achievement.

We paid that little bit extra for the 2xdisc version of the album,it just seemed far better value. In truth, the songs you want to hear are on the first disc so i would now recommend the single disc album. The songs are great to hear again, are uplifting and still with a modern sound. The fact they haven't dated shows the quality of both the performance and writing.Though i've enjoyed the album,i can't help the feeling it'll disappear to the bottom of the pile. That doesn't detract from the album,it's just a personal feeling of where it will be in our music collection, one of those albums that will make an odd appearance and not be played too often. That said, every collection should have this album in it,definitely recommended.Superb singing, lyrics you sing-along with and fantastic music all make for a great album.

To those who insist Gold is the better compilation: this one features full-length newly remastered versions of all our favourite songs and the sound quality is a vast improvement on the Gold selections. It starts with the recently Madonna-sampled Gimme Gimme Gimme and never lets up. Fabulous, solid entertainment for those who haven't got Gold and a crisp 2006 upgrade for those who have.

Abba Gold must have sold so many copies by now since it's release in 1992. It contained 19 priceless tracks. This 'new' cd also contains 19 priceless tracks....except that due to the high quality of Abbas music, three of those on 'Gold' are substituted here. 'Lay all your love on me', 'Does your mother know' and 'Thank you for the music' are dropped in favour of 'Ring ring', 'I do I do I do I do' and 'Summer Night City'. Good swap ? Not really. I prefer the former three. Why release ? Christmas market perhaps. Will it sell ? No doubt. Beware if you have 'Abba Gold' already and in any case the three 'new' tracks were on 'More Abba Gold' which you've probably already got as well. Three stars for the package not for the five star music.
