Customers like the vacuum cleaner's build quality. They mention it has a good reputation for being sturdy and picking up even decorating/building rubble. The hose is tough and doesn't bend as a result blocking the suction. It is very stable and doesn't tip over all the time, unlike their old cleaner with a screw cap and no clips to break. It's good for picking up heavier duty stuff like old ash and debris from around the house. They have had it for 18 years and it has never given any trouble whatsoever, dropping it down. They are also pleased it is made in Britain.
"...Components seem well made and fit together properly, and it's obvious that the suction power plant is a heavy, simple, but therefore reliable unit...." Read more

Customers appreciate the vacuum cleaner's value for money. They find it reasonably priced, easy to maintain, and cost-effective to run. There are no expensive bags or filters needed, and paper replacements are readily available.

Customers appreciate the vacuum cleaner's suction. They find it has good suction, with two suction settings and a turbo button. The eco function reduces suction for tiled or wooden floors, while the level is strong enough to stick to carpets.

Customers appreciate the vacuum cleaner's simplicity. They find it well-made, with a large collection bag and excellent reach, making hoovering an easy task. The assembly is straightforward, with good quality tools and a no-nonsense approach. The on/off switch is easy to operate without fumbling around at ground level. It has a bag that is very easy to change, and the accessories look simple but are well-designed.
"...It does have a bag which is very easy to change. A pack of 10 spare bags cost just £2.89 incl postage...." Read more

Customers have different views on the vacuum cleaner's weight. Some find it lightweight and easy to move around the house, cleaning stairs and bulky items like sawdust. Others find it heavy and difficult to maneuver, with a bulky hose that may be awkward to store.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2014Verified PurchaseMy second Dyson died after 8 years of use and thought would have achange. The more I've had experience of Dysons the more I have become disillusioned with them. My local (cheap) store was quoting £250 and £300 for a similar model-I thought thats a lot of money for a vac. Also heard from some people how their Dysons wrecks the carpet by sucking half of it into the machine. Reading various reviews on the Henry (not all glowing but how many items have a 100% four & five stars) Thought I'd give the Henry a try working on the principal that they have been around for a long time, been used in commercial buildings therefore if they'd been rubbish they would have gone out of business a long time ago plus the one I bought cost £96 - lot cheaper than the Dyson quote at £250-300. It arrived in its own box with various attachments to get in to tight corners stairs etc. The hose seemed good quality and screwed in easily into body. It has two switches on top the green one turns the vac on in economy mode using less electricity. The red ones gives the motor a turbo boost for dog hairs etc. I operated it on just the green and it was plenty powerful enough-on the red setting it lifted the carpet!! It does have a bag which is very easy to change. A pack of 10 spare bags cost just £2.89 incl postage. I know the dyson is bagless but to be honest I became fed up of emptying it into the dustbin on a windy day and getting a face full of dust. The bagged Henry can be emptied in house by removing the bag located under the top half of the machine and sealing it before taking it out into the wind to dump!! Much more healthy on the lungs. Working on the price-if it lasts half the time of the dyson ie 4 years it will still be cheaper by £50. the cord is wound in by hand turning the knob on the top. My dyson has a spring loaded cable return which after 3 years of use failed to return all the cord into the machine leaving 2 metres just hanging there and attempts to stuff the last 2 meters was awkward. (it never quite made it) A mechanical turn of the wheel on top seems less to go wrong. (bit like electric windows on cars!). That's a plus in the Henry design for me. Time will tell whether it lasts but so far so good.
Update: thought I'd add a note having used the Henry for some months now. The material quality, functionality and design quality is just brilliant and far outstrips my previous 2 Dysons. The Dyson is simply not in the same leaugue. It may have been good when it was first manufactured but the quality has dropped dramatically. Whether this coincided with Mr. Dyson moving his factory abroad I don't know but the suction isnt good and bits break. Nothing has broken on the Henry and suction is superb. The main tubes are metal so don't split like the plastic ones on the Dyson. The dust bags mean no clouds of dust when emptying unlike the bagless Dyson which continually gets clogged and covered me in dust as I knocked the plastic body on the dustbin. The Henry is lighter than the Dyson, the power cable is longer and the metal tube and brush head is longer and stronger. In summary Henry wins hands down over the Dyson. I have no experince of other makes like Vax and Meile (except Meile bags are lot dearer than Henry) so can't compare with those makes.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2012Verified PurchaseI read that Henry vacuums are still made in England - the manufacturer has not moved the factory overseas to capitalise on cheaper labour in order to 'stay competitive', i.e. make more profit for the owners. So good on Numatic.
Bought this because for years I've seen office cleaners using them and figured that they must therefore be very robust and effective. I seem to remember using one years ago myself as a summer hotel cleaner. I've also seen loads of broken, big name 'upright' cleaners by the bins outside various houses, and I've always found them prone to bits snapping off, brushes getting clogged etc. I assumed that the Henry would be really expensive because it is more or less of commercial standard, but this is not the case - less than £100 for one of these seems very good value.
The suction on the Henry is not insanely strong on green mode, but is perfectly adequate, and the boost button is there should you require. So as a vacuum cleaner it's effective, and can also be used on hard floors, which many/most houses have these days.
Plenty of extras with this, including different attachments and spare bags. The brush attachment looks as if it's made from horsehair rather than plastic, which is a nice quality touch - less likely to get sticky and curled up I think. Components seem well made and fit together properly, and it's obvious that the suction power plant is a heavy, simple, but therefore reliable unit. The power cable is very long indeed and is easy to wind in.
It is heavy overall, but this is because of the robustness of the rubber gasket and the solid power unit. It can be wheeled around easily enough, but I suppose for taking up and down stairs it could be a bit heavy.
Very pleased overall, will hopefully last for years.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 April 2013Verified PurchaseThis cleaner generally lives up to the advertising and even to the ( slightly irritating at first sight to those for whom housework is not a favourite activity ) smiley face on its casing. I have used other makes of cleaner, including those which don't have a dust bag, and find this is not only reasonably priced, but very efficient and very reliable. You get plenty of suction and can instantly see a difference in the surface being cleaned, it is quick to use and I find the facility to rewind the ( helpfully long ) flex into the casing for carrying is very convenient and a good safety feature. The dust bags hold plenty and don't need changing too often. The cleaner is a robust little model. I have had one for five years which I still use, bought this one three months ago for use upstairs. Generally it's a helpful and indespensible household tool.
The only quibble I have, which prevents me giving it 5 stars, is that it has two settings for power, the default setting when it is switched on ( eco friendly in intent, I suppose ) produces insufficient suction to clean the average carpet or clear up dust on furniture, using this requires repeated applications. The second setting, to get which you have to activate a switch, works a dream. However if you turn the machine off briefly you have to remember to activate the switch again. This can be irritating as you may start using it on the lower power setting and wonder why it's not working. I imagine that the lower setting would be ok for laminate flooring in a household where there are no pets; otherwise I think the higher setting will be used more and that that should be the default setting.
This minor problem aside, it is a really excellent cleaner which I would recommend to anyone.
