CD: Phats & Small,Now Phats What I Call Mus
Amazon.co.uk
At the vanguard of the disco-house movement which engulfed British clubs and hearts alike in 1999, Phats and Small made their name with productions that were unashamedly commercial and eminently danceable. It comes as no surprise then that the Brighton duo's debut album is resolutely upbeat throughout. Hip-swinging basslines and feel-good melodies are the name of the game here, with singer Big Ben lending his jubilant vocals to singles "Turn Around", "Tonite" and "Feel Good". Although they're never going to win any prizes for innovation (the string sample on "Music For Pushchairs" is brazenly pilfered from Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me"), Phats and Small have wisely stick to what they do best and produced a disposable party album par excellence. --Ed Potton

Let me tell you I have fond memories of when I was around twelve and these videos where on, espscially that cartoon one for _feel good_
and no I didn't buy the album as it was new, I never really thought of buying it. But they are so down right groovey these guys, so when I found the album in a flee market, and remebered those day when their singles was the newest thing around.. well didnt I decide to pick it up? oh yes I did :)
so how is the album?
it is very nice
very nice indeed
is It a grand step from the singles, no not really
some tracks intergrate electrified vocals similair to kraftwerk, other frentic strings, just like striking old disco numbers.. Boogie bass, and beata are everywhere, even as some track seemingly drag on and on the groove never looses, through various build ups, swirlings, and the what not boubley phrasing effects
is this album inovative to the electronic music sound?
No, but its just a solid groove record, easily accesible too!
It is funky
stand out tracks include the swirling robotic boogie Electro roll
and the to singles of course, the party house soul catchy number turn around, and its follower, the laid back, sweepingly groovey feel good with its retro disco feel.
equally strikingly catchy
those beats
those sweeping grooves
its good!
as a bonus Turn around is featured live at the bbc
enojoyable stuff this

and why not try
Radio-Activity by kraftwerk?
Most certainly you will also be striked and impressed by The Chemical Brothers Come With Us although this album does not keep the same easy going flow through out, and partly it is much more intense - However it's got many similar grooves, just check out "Star Guitar"
Turn around is a dance classic, its the best dance song ever written in my opinion, and tonite/feel good follow very closely behind.
However. Music for pushchairs feels overly long and dosent capture the magic that armand van helden's version did (even though im not too keen on that).
After that, it turns into a skip album for me. Theme from Sauce is a song i sometimes put on, and Brighton Beach is my favourite of the actual album tracks, but the others just dont capture my attention.
Like i say, filler album, but the three songs that matter, are Unbelievably good songs. I say, get this for the singles, get their second album "This Time Around", for a fantastic all round big beat dance album.
