To sum this book up as "'Tom Brown's Schooldays' meets `Harry Potter'" is an unfair oversimplification, but does go some way to giving you an idea of one of the main story threads. However, there is more to the book than that. It is a highly enjoyable and entertaining read. Not especially demanding, but seldom offering the reader anything on a plate. There are twists as the story continues - not everything is predictable even though there are parallels to be drawn with other stories to be found on page and on screen.

`The Novice' builds and expands upon what has gone before in `The Magicians' Guild', the first in the trilogy. The various characters are developed and we learn more about the Guild, its people, the city of Imardin and the lands and civilisations beyond. New players in the drama are introduced and the plot thickens.

Sonea's life as a novice in the Guild begins in earnest, with the obligatory and inevitable cast of tutors, friends and foes. No story of a person's journey through school life can be devoid of bullies and those, fellow students or tutors alike, who would make life difficult. Sonea's experience is little different. As for use of magic, it's nicely restrained and kept to a sensible level. Powerful allies are unable or unwilling to intervene other than to offer advice or indirect aid, and even then it might not be accepted.

Dannyl's adventures as second ambassador offer an interesting diversion, although they are obviously going to be important as things progress. He travels to more distant lands and encounters cultures very different from that of his home city.

This book, along with it's forerunner "The magician's Guild" is a real page turner. It is well written and engaging, giving a real sense that you are there along side the characters, and living the story with them.
I am upset that I finished the book so quickly as the third book in the Trilogy "The High Lord" is not yet out in paperback. I will definiatley pre-order it though!

I wasn't sure what to expect but was very pleased with this book. The story was easy to follow but not so easy to make it boring in fact I couldn't put it down. Spent until 3am reading one night! Characters were easily picturable (not sure if that is a word)and scenes came to life. Can't wait to read next installment

The Novice, the second book in the trilogy, continues the story of Sonea, Rothen, Ceryni, Lorlen and the High Lord Akkarin. After discovering a little secret Sonea, Rothen and Lorlen live in fear of the High Lord. As well as that, Sonea is having difficulties with her fellow novice's in the Magicians Guild. What will happen to her in the next few years...?
Again Trudi Canavan manages to knock my socks off with an absolutely fantastic book ( and yes im running out of good adjectives to describe this brilliant book). I LOVE the way Trudi writes, as I find myself easily lost in the Land of Kyralia and the Magicians Guild. I am on to the last book (The High Lord) now and no doubt I will weep for ages when i have no more excellent books about Sonea and the Magicians Guild to read.
This is a book that I expect I will re-read for the rest of my life. I love the characters and will be thoroughly upset when I have nothing about them left to read. Again if you like fantasy books and authors such as Garth Nix and Philip Pullman then you will LOVE this book as I do.

if you've read the first book then you are going to read this anyway, cos youre hooked already! Like me!

Far better than the MAgicians Guild, it manages to blend Star Wars (Light & Dark) Harry Potter (Magic School) with Pratchett(City Guilds), taking the best of all 3 and adding something else which is pure Canavan! Enthralling & addictive this book is simply a must read.

I ordered this by mistake, believing I had read Black Magician Book 1, when I hadn't. The beginning of the book reads well: the characters are believable, the plot is engaging and moves quite quickly overall. I am looking forward to completing this after Book 1 of the series, and would also mention the Thieves series as an alternative path - the 'taster' I read in the back of another book was even more engaging.

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of work. It is well written and builds on the first volume meaningfully. I became throughly engrossed with the characters and their experiences and started to undertake on their journey with them.
The characters are developed thoughtfully and in a believable way. I actually felt sorry for some of them at times and became excited when they started to get an upper hand. The locations within the story are also well scripted and create and deepen the atmosphere, adding strength to the storyline.
I found this volume actually improved upon the first volume (although that one was excellent also). I highly recommend this as a read. It's got all the right ingredients for an excellent, absorbing read. My compliments to the author - I've already ordered the final volume in this first class trilogy. I just wish it would come so I can carry on with the story.
