Product description

Review

[this record] will surprise you...and if you're remotely susceptible to the lure of the cover art, it will envelop you. -- Splendid

lo-fi and stark, yet flushed with a rich, emotional layering of electronic background noise. -- The Independent

Anyone who knows of the band cursive wil be familiar with Tim Kasher's haunting voice. His side project, The Good Life, allows him to display his talent even more. Soaring from highs to lows, Novena on a Nocturn is slightly less produced than their second album, Black Out, and what remains is a simple but beautiful album. tarnished lyrics, ("I guess im your big mistake,") and intimate moments where there is no sound but tim's voice make this a personal and touching experience. listening to this is a uniqque experience and its easy to believe the songs are being sung for you alone. a beautiful display of talent, this cd remains one of my very favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warm music for cold harsh nights 15 Aug. 2001
By Joshua Bryan Hammack - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I got to see these guys back in feburary touring with spoon. I felt they stole the show. This is deep mellow dark rock, along the lines of cure, or the smiths, sometimes musically but there in the emotionally, potentionally embarassing, honest lyrics. (The influences show, but take it on a unique direction of sonic sacrifice.) The lyrics are embarassing because they are so stark and vulnerable. The fact that this band is basically one man, makes it known of the genius that is Tim Kasher. Perfect for a generation that did not grow up with the 80's emotional soft supple rock. It is the clever retort one could never think of, when their ex-lover dumped them. The man behind Good Life is in Cursive, which is a completely different, but wonderful band.
5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Simply, one of the best albums Tim Kasher has ever recorded 8 Dec. 2012
By Rob Bell - Published on Amazon.com
I originally bought this album at a show where Good Life opened for the Gloria Record over 12 years ago. The album wasn't officially out yet, but Tim wanted to play the album, in its entirety front to back. That show still ranks as one of the best live performances I've ever seen, but this album is the perfect token of that memory. Every song enjoyable, affecting, powerful. Every song hits you like a ton of bricks but there are some that just blow the doors open. Songs like "A Dim Entrance", "Waiting on Wild Horses", "The Competition" & "A Golden Exit" still stick with me 12 years after that show. It was a cold night when I saw that show, and its cold now, so this feels strangely fitting, that I should review an album 12 years after it was released, just to say its worth buying any day of the week.

5.0 out of 5 stars My thoughts exactly.... 19 May 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com

To make a long story short...This cd has not seen the sleeve of my cd case since I borrowed it from my ex about 3 months ago...I was swallowed from begining to end. Track 6 successfully shook the tears right out of me...Tim Kasher's words hit me like a runaway train..."Your son is a glorious mess, who wrecks anything he adores". Wow...This is a magnificent cd...I would highly recommend this to anyone who eats, breathes, feels, has skin, blood, a brain and somewhat of a thought process...

5.0 out of 5 stars this is a beautiful recording 26 Jan. 2001

Novena on a Nocturn is a beautiful, melodious album, but it still retains a glittery pop-esque vibe. Every song is great in its own way, and every song will touch you. "Competition" is one of the best, most emotional ballads I've heard in a long time, and "Happy Birthday" is so close to the exact thoughts everyone has had at one point or another. I highly, highly recommend this album. Listening to it is really an experience.
