From back when they debuted on Nova during the first Annihilation storyline, Abnett & Lanning have done a masterful job taking this previously third-rate character and turning him into not just a major player in Marvel Cosmicology, but one of the best reads in comics during their run.
This grouping, covering some fun diversion with Galactus and the Silver Surfer and a totally fun use of the "Secret Invasion (meh)" crossover to reintroduce characters like Super Skrull (anti-hero?) and Darkhawk (another also-ran hero, used much better by A & L).
The stories, like most A & L scripts, sets up subplots for the biggest adventures yet to come for Nova and his growing cast of characters. Some are subtle and some smack you in the face, but the seeds are strewn all over the place in these issues, which makes the intertwining of an otherwise overdone crossover more engaging.
The whole A & L Nova run is one of the best ever in Marvel's cosmic mythology and rival the great Starlin stories that introduced Thanos and remade Warlock.
While there are all sorts of collections and Omnibuses (Omnubi?) that collect bits and pieces of the Nova run, it's a shame there isn't one big Omnibus collecting them all (plus the Thanos Imperative that ended their run).
Abnett & Lanning's influence is all over the current Marvel Cinemaverse and you can catch some of their unadulterated work in this collection.
In Nova Volume 3, Nova struggles to evacuate a planet about to be eaten by Galactus. But holding up his efforts is an evil murderous entity possessing the inhabitants of the planet, gruesomely slaughtering innocents and sabotaging Richard Riders efforts to evacuate them before Galactus destroys them all. In an effort to buy time, Nova must face off against the Silver Surfer as well as Galactus himself.
The story also sees Richard Rider returning to earth to deal with the Skrulls "Secret Invasion". Helping him is his former ally from Annihilation Conquest...The Super Skrull. But is the disgraced Skrull warrior trying to help Nova or is it all a ploy to get back into the good graces of the Skrull Empire?
While still very entertaining, Nova Volume 3 has the unenviable task of wrapping up loose story threads (The Secret Invasion) and starting new ones (The rebuilding of the Nova Corp) as well as reuniting Richard Rider with his parents and brother. Not as fluid as Volume 1&2 but still a very entertaining read. Nova Volume 3 collects issues 13 thru 18. Recommended.
