This is a great piece of non fiction reportage by Nobel laureate Marquez. The author, famous for "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and other great novels, describes a number of kidnappings by the Medelin drugs cartel, and in particular the effect that confinement has on the victims. The Colombian writer started his career as a journalist and felt the problems of his country deeply. He was described by one Colombian president as "the greatest Colombian who ever lived". In a world where kidnapping for ransom or political reasons is widespread, this is a "must read" book for anyone wishing to understand the issues.

MMV-.
