Now, I don’t know how much help Dynamo had when writing this, but I’ll admit that the whole thing is very well written with no obvious mistakes and extraordinary insight in to the magician’s mind. Whilst he doesn’t reveal the secrets behind his magic, that’s not what you want to hear anyway – if you knew how he did his tricks, it would ruin them!
However, you do learn why he does the magic that he does, and it’s fascinating to see how his troubled childhood in Bradford helped to shape the man that he became. He also covers his early career, and it’s particularly interesting to see how the Prince’s Trust helped him to get to where he is today.
My copy holds a little extra significance – it’s signed by the man himself, as part of an offer that he posted through his Facebook page where you could get your copy signed if you pre-ordered it before the book’s launch. I would’ve pre-ordered it anyway – he’s a fascinating man, and you should leap at the chance to find out a bit more about what makes him tick.
Celebrity autobiographies are usually vacuous and faintly depressing, and they reek of ghost-writing and a lack of talent – here, Dynamo rewards the Dynamites, his dedicated followers, with something a little different. A little special. A little magical.
Here Steven Frayne, or Dynamo as he's more commonly known in the media, tells the story of how he got to where he is now and the events that shaped his life that put him on the path he's on now. From a lonely 4 year old living on one of the roughest estates in Bradford to now one of the most contemporary, coolest magicians the world has seen, Dynamo has definitely got a worthy story to tell. It takes you on a bit of an emotional ride too, getting bullied as a kid and the embarrassment of not being able to tell his mum, but his great-grandad (or "Gramps" as he affectionately calls him) understanding that he needed help and decided to teach him something that would help him stand up to the bullies, gain confidence and spark an interest that would determine his love for magic and shape his life to what it is now. The years following lead him to travel across the pond to America to reconfirm his dream of making a career of magic, and a grant from the Princes Trust to buy a camcorder to start filming his talent on unsuspecting "victims" for millions to see and be amazed at on YouTube.
Don't buy this book expecting that like other autobiographies where the celebrity in question reveals the intimate details of their private/personal life, this book is more about him as a magician and that part of his life rather than the former. It's a very inspiring book; Dynamo emphasises the amount of days, weeks and years it took to perfect his magic and trying to make a career out of it.Read more ›

Would have preferred a chronological order of events, rather than to and froing back and forth!
