Top critical review
Unlike many other reviewers of this short story, I was not bowled over by 'The Note'.

I have rated 'The Note' two stars. According to Amazon's rating system a two star rating means 'I don't like it'. It isn't that I didn't like the story, it is more that I just did not connect with it in any way. I did not warm to any of the characters and particularly so with Eddie Collins, the central character of the story. I found his arrogance particularly annoying. Perhaps the author's intention is that we should not like any of the characters but as a trailer for a series featuring Eddie Collins, it does not encourage me to read more stories that feature him. In addition. there are too many coincidences in the plot for my liking. I cannot really provide any examples as it would mean revealing more of the plot than would be acceptable for a reviewer - but if you read the story you'll see what I mean. Finally, I am a little perplexed by the marketing blurb saying it will appeal to readers of Ian Rankin and Kathy Reichs - in my opinion their novels (and short stories in the case of Ian Rankin), generally have stronger characterisation and plots.
So, I can only assume I must have missed something when reading 'The Note' as unlike many other reviewers of this short story, I was not bowled over by it.
