Wow what an unbelievable, horrific true story. Absolutely astounding book to read. The spirit of both mum and daughter so indomitable. I couldn't put this book down until the end.. I literally read for 2 days. Brilliantly awful and triumphant.

I liked this book because it seems to give an honest reflection on a very difficult experience in the author's life. The words, Where there's a will , there's a way, are dramatically portrayed. She remains strong without submitting to hatred and does not reject the entire Persian race and so I think it is good for anyone who tends to overly react against people of a different background.

Had been recommended this book - but didn't enjoy it - rather a battered copy with very dense text.

Read this novel many years ago and then again recently at a book club and found it to be just as compelling second time around. It is the true story of an American woman( Betty Mahmoody the author of this book) going with her daughter and husband to visit his family in Iran. What was supposed to be a two week holiday turned into a nightmare when she realised her husband, who had a personality change for the worse no sooner had they landed in his homeland, had trapped her and in fact wanted them to live there. Betty's strength and courage is admirable and once read this is most definitely a book you will never forget.
