I can understand why Sienna wouldn't want another soldier. Being a soldier's wife is tough. I am happy that Nick was so persistent in his pursuit of Sienna. She has lots of issues to deal with from her marriage but he knew what he wanted and he went after it. Sexy! The chemistry between them was smokin' hot! I love military romance and Samantha Holt has done an amazing job with this one. I can't wait to see what's next.
I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.
On the whole this was an enjoyable story that kept me reading. It's not one of the best that I've read but it definitely wasn't one of the worst. One of the things for me is that Sienna is quite a whingy character. Now I'm not saying she doesn't have the right, she really did have a scumbag of a husband but you see, my thing is, she is the one that made the choice to stay with him for all that time. Yes, I know she was leaving him when he died and it took his hands around his throat for her to do that but still... she knew he was cheating, it was a loveless marriage, yada yada yada and she STILL stayed. Nick deserves a medal, not for being a marine, but for keeping his mouth shut in such a situation.
Not Another Soldier is a relatively well written and fast paced novel. The characters are all well rounded whether you like them or not. For me, it was a bit like a Chinese meal - satisfying at the time but hungry half an hour later.
Sienna had been an Military wife for 5 years, and she has just buried her husband, Rob. Her best friend, Nick, is also Rob's friend and a Marine. There is chemistry between Sienna and Nick, that cannot be denied, but the timing is all wrong. Sienna is right to feel guilty. But then things spiral out of control, and Sienna and Nick find themselves in a situation that neither saw coming.
I enjoyed this book. I was given it blind, and had no idea what the book was about, so a complete surprise. The story moves at a fair pace, with twists and turns that you are given hints at along the way but takes a while to come together. The characters are believable and likable. I particularly liked the way Holt describes Sienna's reaction to Nick kissing her, at her husband's funeral. Not appropriate, but dealt with beautifully. Some sex, well written though, and not at all corny, to me anyway! Nick's reaction to being wounded at war is also well dealt with.
What I didn't like was the tense it was written in. I am not a fan of first person, present tense, and have been known to not even bother reading past the first bit. But as I got into the book, it didn't notice it so much. It also flipped between Nick and Sienna, the differences are noted, with their name at each change, so its not confusing. It was just that sometimes it flipped between the two within the same chapter, and I don't think that was needed. There was a great deal of soul searching, and while the characters were in touch with their feelings, at some points I skimmed over these bits.
Not a bad read, but whether I would read any more of this author?? I can't say no, but can't say yes, either.
The book is a fantastic read, with an exciting but credible plot, characters who you can believe in and great pacing which maintained my interest throughout. As with all Samantha Holt's writing sexual tension oozes from the page whenever the hero and heroine appear together and the love making scenes are sexy, sensual and sublime. The novel is written in the first person and whole chapters are recounted either from the POV of Sienna or Nick. I felt that this gave the novel a more contemporary feel and also worked well as it allowed the reader to get into the minds and the motivations of the two main characters and view the different scenes through their eyes. The element of suspense and danger in the novel certainly added to my enjoyment. I feel that this author has found another sub genre of romance in which she can showcase her writing talents.
Oh and I absolutely ADORED Nick! He is loyal and honourable and above all single minded in his determination to protect Sienna and to overcome her doubts to ensure that they have a future together. I liked that he was honest with her about his feelings, and whilst respecting her views he never gives up on her and takes every opportunity he is presented with to foster a physical and emotional bond between them. A determined Alpha male, with a heart of gold, is just SO SEXY!Read more ›
