Book Description

A race-against-time conspiracy thriller with a deadly twist from the bestselling author of The First Apostle.

From the Inside Flap

EVIL IS IN THE BLOOD

BOHEMIA, 1741

On the northern banks of the Vltava River an extraordinary event is taking place. Inside a private chapel a high-born Hungarian lady is being laid to rest. But not before her heart is removed from her body and she is buried beneath a layer of heavy stones - lest she rise again to prey upon her victims …

VENICE, 2010

Holidaying in the world’s most beautiful city, Chris Bronson and Angela Lewis discover a desecrated tomb. Inside it is a female skeleton and an arcane diary dating back hundreds of years. Written in Latin, it refers to a lost scroll that will provide an ‘answer’ to an ancient secret.

Soon corpses of young women, all killed in the same ritualistic manner, start appearing throughout the city. And when Angela disappears, Bronson knows that he must find her before she too is slaughtered.

But his hunt for Angela leads him back to the Island of the Dead, and into a conspiracy more deadly than he could ever have imagined …

This book really makes you think! After reading the afterword at the end of the book, I was amazed at the depth of the historical background the author had gone to to produce this novel. It does make you wonder if fantasty has a background in ancient fact/mythology. It certainly appears that people from thousands of years ago believed in the concept of vampires and as late as the last century, precautions were taken to ensure corpses of alleged vampires did not return to hunt the living. The story is great fun and with twists and turns to the end. It is a definite page-turner and well written. You are still left wondering at the end of the book......Might not think about visting Venice again too soon!!! Seriously it was a great read and inspired the imagination. The Nosferatu Scroll

Great characters, lovely backdrop in the city of Venice. Mystery, myths, truth and fiction linked extremely well to provide an exciting book. The story fo!lowing Chris and Angela having a break in Venice when they visit the cemetery island where their problems start. In the meantime young girls have been taken from Venice's streets but only a couple of bodies have been found.

Could an ancient text help a young woman who has been taken from the streets live or will the evil men holding her stop her leaving them forever?

Conspiracies and vampires must be the two most popular topics for lightweight fiction at the moment and in this thriller James Becker combines the two. Whether he is successful or not is up to the reader and I'll leave you to make up your own mind. On my own part I read every vampire novel that comes along and I wasn't disappointed with his take on this old story.
Some reviewers would do well to remember that this is disposable entertainment. This is the sort of book you pick up at the airport attracted by the cover. The way some reviewers have torn into it you would think Becker was presenting it as some authorative tome on the subject.
The story flows well with no flat spots and some of the plot stretches the imagination a little and yes some of Mr Becker's writing can be a little matter of fact but overall this was an enjoyable read and at half the cover price who can complain?
The book succeeded on another level for me in that the author has made me want to visit Venice now so well done on that score Mr Becker.

Not entirely what I had expected though I did enjoy this book.
I'll never think of Venice in the same way again.
It took quite a while to get to the main storyline but it was worth the read.
