Great gift for dad, grandpa or father-in-law!
Nose Art and Pin Ups is a documentary DVD which tells the stories behind iconic World War Two images painted on aircraft for American Servicemen belonging to the Eighth Army Airforce (USAAF) based in England like the "Our Gal Sal" and "Delta Rebel Two".
The film explores the various themes of Nose Art through pin-ups of "gals" back home, and American States as well as some more humorous images of animals and other cartoon characters.
Nose Art was the name given to expressive images painted on the noses of aircraft used throughout the war Bomber and fighter pilots and their crews explain why they chose their particular artwork and how their lives were made more bearable with the moral boost that Nose Art provided.
These truly brave servicemen share their stories of deadly missions, friends made and lost together with their capture and escape as prisoners of war.
The film also hears from veteran crew chief Don Allen who painted artwork on more than 100 aircraft belonging to the Fourth Fighter Group.
This DVD is in the PAL format and will not play on NTSC equipment.
The DVD has a running time of 95 minutes plus three extra features totalling an additional 25 minutes.
Please note some of the Pin Up images and artwork painted on the aircraft and shown in this film do have scenes of semi-nudity. This was a different era - please appreciate these were not modern times!
The cost of the DVD is £15.99. Postage within the UK for one DVD is £2.25 for first class standard delivery. International postage will be charged at the rate relevant to the country. The interviews on the DVD are fantastic and gripping. The Nose Art of the 8th USAAF is a truly deep area of study. This DVD does not cover all the nose art as that would take vast hours to do so but the few veterans who are interviewed give great stories as to how the ideas of the nose art came about. Don Allen and co come across as humble men who served their country proudly.
This is one of the best DVD's I have seen on the Mighty 8th and would compliment any military historians collection.
The stories behind the art work were fascinating to listen to & it is good that the men were still alive to tell them. It made a nice change to hear about a different side to the World War 2. This dvd kept me interested right through. I would certainly recommend it.
