If you have been recommended to buy this book for school/college/uni I would definitely recommend that you do- this is a BIG collection, showcasing most of the important writers and works of the period. I wish it was possible to have seen a full list of what this book contains before I bought it (it would have definitely saved me money) as it actually includes the first book of the Faerie Queene (a good version with annotations/translations) and Marlowe's Faustus- both of which I have bought separately.
If you have the choice to buy this new or second hand, I would probably plump for new. The pages are very thin ( a bit like bible pages) and can easily get bashed about in a bag. I also find paperbacks are easily bent when they are used for a book this thick.
I probably wouldn't recommend this book if you want it for anything other than study, as it is very heavy, the pages are delicate and the text quite small.

As I said in the title, it is expensive- but it isn't really if you think of the money you save by not buying all of the poems, plays and essays it contains separately.

Well, it's good that Norton offer their blockbuster anthology in (relatively) bite sizes, but, like most anthologies, this is a pretty attenuated version of the real thing. Everything is, inevitably, reduced to the same, small, modern fount, on thin paper. Notes are OK (and there are reasonable headnotes), but no substitute for real scholarly annotation. To complain about the selection would be to shoot fish in a barrel. These are complaints about the nature of anthologies as such, rather than the Norton in particular; but if we want our students to have an authentic experience of reading literature we really don't want to be sending them towards such compendia.

A good edition of Renaissance writing, with some changes from previous and subsequent editions. Only potential problem is that pages are very thin and somewhat delicate. However, after owning for 6 months and carrying in a large book bag, I can't see any damage to cover or pages. Very happy with this Anthology.

HASH(0x914e1c54) out of 5 stars The best anthology money can buy! 30 Nov. 2009
By R B - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The Entire Norton collection is a must-own for anyone, especially though interested in reading the classics. It includes every piece of "important" literature ever written, with very detailed, well-written commentaries and footnotes to help you understand the historical setting of the piece. I bought them for class last year and have never regretted it. I am thinking of getting the American set next.

HASH(0x914e1ca8) out of 5 stars I love this anthology 3 Sept. 2015

I love this anthology. I got it for a college course, but ended up keeping it. I just found the poetry included in this anthology to be beautiful and I love how they give you a lot of room for notes. The annotations included in this anthology are great too. I sometimes get annoyed with pointless annotations, but these ones help me to better understand the text and time period.

HASH(0x9183efe4) out of 5 stars Old and Middle English in a Scholastic Anthology! 13 Dec. 2015
By Kharsa12 - Published on Amazon.com

It is impossible to claim Old and Middle English are "bad" writings, however they are not to my taste. The stories within the anthology were interesting but had they not been assigned, I would never have bothered.
