Northerners Paperback – 7 July 2011
Described by the Guardian as 'the photographic equivalent of Ken Loach', Samuels shot legendary figures of northern life, from Alan Bennett to Morrissey, LS Lowry to George Best and Sir Ben Kingsley, but most famously and vividly he captured the realities of everyday life across the north.
With snatched shots of children cheekily mugging to his camera, pictures of the more grandiose members of society at the local hunt, photos of the bleaker side of life with the riots in Moss Side, and snaps of the young and fashionable posing as they hang around with nothing to do, Northerners reveals a photographer at one with his subject; and a region whose open character was meant to be captured through a lens.

His stunning photographs remind so many of us of a certain age just how things were not so very long ago. In the context of the North, Samuels' images are the equivalent of Lowry's painted canvasses - I can pay no higher tribute than that.
A very worthwhile purchase for those who would like to be whisked back in time or a tasty sampler for those too young to have personally experienced life back then.
(Incidentally, if you ever visit the Trafford Centre, pop in to the Wetherspoon's pub which has a fine display of Samuels' work along with a portrait of the maestro himself).
If you like mono down to earth photography, recording events as they were then, theres no reason not to like this.
Harry Benson without the glitz.
Understated magnumesque images from a very British recent past.
Martin Parr without the grotesque colors.
The Britain Duffy, David Bailey and Donovan left out.
This book deserves to sell a lot and justify the publication of further work by this charming, sensitive photographer.
A must for any serious collection of photography books .
Reproduction of photos is good.
Considering I paid only 99p for the book, it is excellent value for money.
