  1. Interview with Elaine Constantine - Director of Northern Soul (DVD)
  2. DVD Extras

Product Description

In one of the most anticipated releases of the year, Harmless are proud to announce that we will be issuing the soundtrack to the forthcoming film, “Northern Soul” directed by Elaine Constantine. Early viewings confirm that “Northern Soul” will be the most accurate portrayal yet of this legendary musical movement which started in the north of England in the late 1960s and has now spread around the world and become a huge international scene. The film is due to launch in the UK in October 2014 and there will be considerable mainstream media coverage following the recent TV coverage via The One Show on BBC1 and the Culture Show on BBC2.
The soundtrack package for “Northern Soul” consists of CD1: the soundtrack itself containing all the key Northern Soul tracks from the film, CD2: an additional CD of specially chosen Northern Soul tracks compiled by “Northern Soul” director Elaine Constantine and an exclusive DVD with Elaine Constantine being interviewed about the making of the film by actor James Lance who plays top Northern Soul DJ Ray Henderson in the film. Plus there will also be some nice extras on the DVD!
This beautifully packaged 2CD/DVD package will also come with a 20 page booklet specially written by Gareth Sweeney – co-author of the bestselling accompanying book “Northern Soul”. This will be Harmless’ key release throughout 2014 and early demand and interest are already indicating that this will be a ‘must-have’ purchase for anyone who is interested in British musical culture, U.S. soul music and no doubt everyone who will see the film.

This is the soundtrack of the movie that has been threatening a cinema release for the past 18 months. I bought the book last year and next month I'll have the bluray. (I'm not sure how it's been confused with the DVD release as that's not due for more than a month).
What you receive is:
CD1 the actual soundtrack
CD2 is a compilation by Elaine Constantine
Bonus DVD contains interviews about making the film etc.(The actual movie DVD/Bluray is released on 20/10/14)
I don't think there's anything new here and I probably have most of it already, but as a compilation it's strong and worth buying to make up the set.

Bought this after going to watch the film. It's a great soundtrack. Sounds like stuff that you think you know in the Stax, Motown styles, but it isn't. How often do you ever listen to a double album where you know no songs, and only two or three artists and still enjoy it?

The film may have had mixed reviews (did they all expect a glossy magazine!!!) but the soundtrack is truly fantastic. If you're into Northern Soul I doubt this will let you down!

Fantastic, featuring many tracks that are not on your run of the mill Northern Soul Compilation. Roll on 17th October when the film is out at the cinema

Northern soul fans...the Freemasons of music...a club so hard to get into and to be honest they never look like they are havin that much fun anyway. I wasn't there, I don't have a pile of old 45's, the naff badges and crap clothes...but, I do concur that the music is fantastic. I haven't seen the film (wouldn't encourage them) but the soundtrack is as good a Northern soul collection as I've heard. I particularly like cd 2. The directors choice. Track 2 Little Love Affair by Patrinell Staton is beautiful. I would encourage any fan of soul music to buy this compilation. Great to dance to even if you don't have the right moves and talcum in your school bag!

The first CD is the film soundtrack and is an excellent selection of popular northern soul "stompers" and some more subtle mid tempo sounds.

The second CD contains an absolute gem - Little Love Affair by Patrinell Staten (sounds like a very modern version of Northern Soul).

The rest of CD 2 has a few classics but several poor tracks with a "Northern Beat" but (in my humble opinion) seem to lack that magic combination of great vocals and moving lyrics.

My choice for CD 2 would have included:

I Have Faith In You - Edwin Starr
Don't Pretend - The Belles (WOW what a sound)
Love Reputation - Denise LaSalle
That's When The Tears Start - The Blossoms
My World Is Crumbling - Brenda Holloway
What - Judy Street
You Better Use Your Head - Little Anthony And The Imperials
Tell Me It's Just A Rumour - The Isley Brothers

Overall. A BIG THANK YOU TO ELAINE CONSTANTINE FOR HER INSIGHT AND LOVE OF NORTHERN SOUL. YOUR EFFORTS ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. KEEP THE FAITH. SPREAD THE FAITH!

Born in 66 so my memories of Northern Soul were initially from the Youth Club and then at Mod Nights and scooter runs early eighties. Great to hear stuff I've not heard before as well as some classics.
