About the Author

David Sibley is both the author and artist of this groundbreaking book, which sealed his reputation as one of North America's top field birders. He has since written and illustrated a comprehensive field guide to the trees of North America (2009), as well as a number of other bird books, including the Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behaviour (Helm, 2001).

I have had the marvellous first edition of this book for over ten years, and I hastily bought this updated second edition as soon as it came out.

But there are two problems with this new edition. These problems are not with what the author has produced, but with the printing. Firstly, the colours on some of the bird illustrations are too dark. Secondly, the print of much of the text is a sort of faint grey colour instead of black, and also rather small, making it difficult to read.

There has been a lot of discussion about this on the American Amazon website (Amazon.com), and it seems there is the possibility of changes being made when a new print run is produced by the publishers.

This book can hardly be called pocket-sized but is a very useful identification guide to all the species found in North America north of Mexico. The plates are of a reasonable standard with very helpful pointers towards identification features. There are detailed range maps for every species and the usual species descriptions and habitats. Recommended as a book to use at home or in the car for more detailed research but not in the field where the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America (6th edition) reigns supreme

Updated edition is just as good as the original - better colouring and updated maps etc make it worth buying again - still the best guide for travel to the USA or Canada - the split east & west versions are awaited eagerly...

I have long had both the National Geographic and Peterson guides to the birds of North America but the Sibley guide is a joy to own and will be the first I reach for when a Yank reaches our shores.....it came a day after I saw the Hudsonian Whimbrel.
