Can't say enough about these books - we have worked our way through them and they have done wonders for both my 6 year old and my 9 year old. Don't bother with any other brand of book - there's no coloured pictures and fun with these books but they do the job fantastically well and are structured in a way that they gradually build and progress the child through the concept they are learning. I recommend that if you are just starting these books that you do the no-nonsense ones as these have examples at the beginning of each lesson and that gets your child to work it out for themselves. My daughter went to a tutor for one term and I decided to do these instead as they can be done everyday (one or two lessons) which helps them see progress much quicker than once a week and therefore they start seeing results quicker at school. Would recommend that you start with your child's actual age or below as they gain a lot of confidence by being able to whizz through them themselves without having to ask you anything and it also then gives them a foundation to build on in the next age group up.28 lessons in each book - 2 pages each - so can be done in 2 weeks. Good for using to consolidate learning which is sometimes missed these days in the state system. Love them and so do my kids.

Undoubtedly this is a useful book of exercises and tailored well to the age range it targets.

However,I can't bring myself to wax as enthusiastically about it as some other reviewers as I don't find the overall structure as well-considered as it might be. More importantly, although the authors are thorough in covering the technical aspects of good English and I have no wish to minimise the importance of that, it does little it seems to me to promote good writing as opposed to simply technically accurate writing.

There is nothing her for example on the value of the short sentence, the use of subordinate clauses, the avoidance of verbosity, the evils of cliché and jargon and more. Nor are there any examples of good writing, nor for that matter of bad. I believe it to be crucial that these essentials are introduced at this stage of English education. Vocabulary also receives no serious attention.

None of this is crucial, providing these concerns are covered via other approaches and texts. My fear is that there lies behind these exercises the conviction that the central matters of importance are to be found within these covers. I would argue strenuously that they are not.

Brilliant book for 11+ preparation. I have used these books for all my 4 children and so far 3 of my kids have passed their 11+ and gone on to Grammar school. I cannot praise these books enough. Must be used for any 11+ prep work.
