Nokia 808 PureView
The next breakthrough in photography
It's time to think differently about photography. Say hello to perfect photos ready to share or print. Nokia PureView imaging technology turns the world of photography upside down. It takes every bit of image goodness captured by a 41MP sensor and Carl Zeiss lens and turns it into beautifully detailed 5MP photos and Full HD videos. Be ready to shoot in a second, even in low light, and share instantly with friends – all from a rather clever smartphone.
How good can a pixel be?
With its groundbreaking 41MP image quality, Carl Zeiss lens, and PureView imaging technology, you'll take the best photos ever with a smartphone. For example, when you want a 5MP photo, PureView packs the goodness of 7 pixels into 1 for sharp, clear, and ready to share photos.
Film in high definition and hi-fi. There's 1080p Full HD video recording with up to 4 x lossless zoom that's smooth and completely silent. And it's the world's first device to include Rich Recording. This combines a unique digital microphone and Nokia algorithms to record distortion-free audio at levels of up to 140 dB.
Zoom and zoom again
Zoom closer and react faster. The camera activates in less than a second so it's ready to shoot when you need. You can zoom as fast as your finger up to 3 times as close with zero loss of detail. PureView can even shoot smooth Full HD video at 30 frames per second at 4x zoom.
Don't be afraid of the dark
The drama of the darkness is always a photographic challenge. However, in addition to the Carl Zeiss lens and 41MP sensor, the Nokia 808 PureView gives you a powerful Xenon flash and LED video light so you're ready for spontaneous moments when spirits are high and the lights are low.
A smart smartphone
Give the world a different perspective on everyday life – you have creative control. With the intelligent gallery, sharing is easy too. Send photos or videos straight to Facebook or Flickr in the perfect file size or tap to another phone using NFC. Or hook up to an HD TV via HDMI or wireless streaming for a real big screen showing.

Negatives are: there is no warranty so I couldnt register it with Nokia Care. Because this phone wasnt on contract anywhere I couldnt get any help from my contract supplier to explain why the internet wouldnt work on my phone, I couldnt get Nokia Care to help because my phones IMEI number is not registered with them due to the warranty issue. To get your phone set up for internet is pretty complicated for the lay-person and although I got it to work by accident I still can't email pictures and when I MMS a picture I seem to get charged a lot by my contract company. I have downloaded configuration SMS messages from my mobile line supplier but doesnt seem to make any difference.
The phone is outdated, well the software is but thats ok with me. I love the look of the phone, the software, the usability and of course the camera is AMAZING !!!! and that alone for me is enough, I dont really care about apps etc that much.
Overall the phone is great but if you are like me and not too savvy when it comes to technical stuff then getting some things like internet, connectivity etc set up ok will be a real pain for you. One or 2 ppl I have chatted to on the net havent had any issues so maybe its because they had a decicated mini-sim card in the phone rather than the 'size-adjustable' one I had and whether that made any difference who knows !!
It might not be for everyone's liking but if you want to capture moments in super high resolution, then this handset is for you.
My previous handset was the Nokia N8, so it seemed the 808 was the perfect step up.
The 808 camera packs some nice advanced features such as bracketing photography (HDR), contrast, saturation, sharpness, but at times it feels as though Nokia forgot some other more basic features such as manual shutter speed in order to lock off its exposure.
At times I think the camera could benefit from having a RAW feature to save its images but then again the JPG's are impressive as they are.
Like the N8, this PureView handset has a bulk of a camera on its back, however it has a nice feel to its shape. It is pleasant to hold and comfortable to carry in the pocket of my jeans. No different from the N8 in fact.
The 808 is also noticeably heavier, which compliments its robust design and reassuring build quality.
Good battery life, it feels as though the battery lasts for as long as a phone should last before needing to be charged. The added benefit to this handset is that the battery can be replaced if it becomes worn over time, unlike the N8 with its sealed built-in battery.
It's clear that Nokia have also made efforts for the 808 to work as a social network media device with built in features to share photos and videos directly to facebook, twitter, Flickr, etc. Although internet browsing 'okay' for my needs, the more demanding social consumer might see this phone as a step back when compared to other internet savvy smartphones out there.
Overall the 808 is the best 'camera'-phone hands down. And a perfect companion for the avid photographer.
So why would you even consider this phone? Well for one it has that old Nokia build quality. It comes with a user replaceable1400 mAh battery which fits over the sim and micro sd slots. The polycarbonate cover then slips over the back. There is a fairly large bulge for the camera but you'll soon forget that once you take a picture. To simply put this in perspective... kiss your old point and shoot goodbye. The screen is so clear and easy to view even on in bright sun (I haven't seen anything this good in bright sun). The screen is unfortunately low res (640x360) but gives a 16:9 ratio. Fortunately everything is formatted for it and you'll not notice unless you have another smart phone next to it.
Operating system wise Belle has improved to the point it feels like Android but much less chaotic which then forces me to ask the question why oh why nokia did you allow Elop to throw gasoline on the fire and burn the platform from under you? This OS when I showed it to a friend who has an HTC One remarked "I don't remember Symbian being like this. This looks like Android".
If you are light apps and don't use some of the more popular:netflix, instagram, kindle then there are alternatives for the remaining popular apps or actual versions of them that do run on belle. Unfortunately as Belle has been shelved, development will be very limited.
So what's it like to use as a phone? Well very good. Nokia always was good in this department and haven't let up. Smart dailing and going throught the address book is a breeze. Driving through problem areas I'd lose reception more easily than my old e71. Saying that the reception and call quality are still pretty good but as with all the newer phones somethings did move backward. Battery life being one of them maily due to the screen sucking power. You'd easily get 2 days with the 808 pureview. This drops to one if you are surfing instensively or using the flash to take pictures (it has a xenon flash).
Finally for a flagship it arrived with few accessories (charger, lanyard and headset). So despite having a capacity for a micro sd card, you'll have to buy your own.
So despite all of those negatives the description of the positives I can give doesn't do this phone justice. It's one of those things that everything works synergistically producing a product that is far greater than the sum of it's parts. Despite some throwbacks it sports cutting edge e.g. the 41megapixel camera and Near Field communication. It's earned a place in my pocket and a full 5 stars in my opinion.
