the device has stretched many boundaries and still amazes me every day.i have hacked my own wlan network at home using the x termianl and a third party App.Customised the menu functions and desktops to suite me. saved an entire boxset onto my phone to watch and keep me busy on the commute. i once had 5 movies on my phone. view PDF, exel, word, powerpoint, and websiteds documents as if on a PC or a laptop.a gazzilion of appps that are easy to download for free.Key board is brilliant and easy to use. Realy Amazing display as even AVI video formats are also supported by the device.\consBattery: with all that power you will run out of juice so a spare bl-5j battery will be helpfull.Root Directory: took me 12 hours to figure out the x terminal and how to get to root directory.WLAN manager is also annoying and gives u limited optionssome functions like the little heart shaped icon or sub menu at the center top are hard to find.the hand set is a bit heavy but thats not a big concern.over all this phone or mini computer is ment for a geek like me not a guy like my dad who killed my PC mouse.i would take the N900 over the dell streak, or any Archios media thingy.

My N900 has just given up, it failed at the plug in for electricity. However I owned it 1 1/2 yrs and used it heavily and it survived several falls in a household with young kids. Functionally I just loved MAEMO, a system totally distanced from the commercial world. Most aps were free, and 95% worked. The system was fast and powerful. The downside was that Nokia killed Maemo itself and therefore from 2010 aps were no longer renewing. I great loss to the mobile industry I think, subject to bad management at Nokia and bad marketing. I will not be getting another Nokia because I do not want an all streamed windows offering me commercial pay for aps and twice not because Nokia withheld the N900 follow up the N9 from the market in the major Western nations so that we go for Windows 7. Having worked with this phone it is beyond belief to ditch such a great system and community.

Plus:
Great camera,
great resolution
fast processor
tons of memory space
all aps one would reasonably want for free
fantastic audio recordings
very good QERTY keyboard
good battery life (one day at full use)

Minuses
disappointing twitter aps

good product as expected : i am a nokia fan and have used their products for as long as i can remember. solid and without the fanfare associated with other trademarks as a pr ploy but with no added value to their products. the only caveat is the relatively short battery life but not really a big deal.

I suspect this product was a fake from wherever it comes. It feels slightly different from the first one I bought when the phone was initially released. The internal memory kept reading 1.2GB instead of 32GB. And most of the accessories that comes originally with it were missing from the box.

I never learn, used to be a Nokia fan until the 6280, moved on to "proper" phones (samsung, HTC, etc..) then got this one after hearing all the hype. worthless brick!
Yes you can all sorts of stuff that you can't with other phones, but being the abandoned child from Nokia it doesn't have any decent support or apps. Just lots of pointless and not fun apps from Linux geeks and Atari style games. Such a waste!

Great phone, BUT many cars now come with a bluetooth connection for hands-free operation of your phone. The N900 makes the connection OK in my Audi A4, but doesn't load my contacts into the car's handsfree system. This makes it almost useless as you have to dial the numbers manually.
According to Nokia's Support Discussions, this also affect hands-free via TomTom sat navs etc. as well as Minis, Jags (& Audis) and even Nokia's own HF-510 Speakerphone. If you regularly use your phone using in-car hands-free, avoid the N900!

Sadly my N900 died last year after an unexpected trip down the toilet. I 'upgraded' to a Sony Xperia s and I was so sad that I did. This phone is completely customisable. You can alter colours, fonts, carrier names (Mine was called 'Al's Own Network' - which used to draw confused looks from friends. It also very easy to change things like bootscreens, Etc. You can install a wide range of software from a community of real enthusiasts. It had the best Facebook integration ever. It plays music superbly. It has an FM transmitter so you can listen to your music tracks without a bluetooth stereo. It has great emulators and an attachment called Gamegripper (google it) which slides over the keyboard to play SNES, Megadrive, GBA games, etc, perfectly. The browser supported flash. Oh it can multi-task like crazy (10 apps easily).
It has a bold, utilitarian design, a kickstand for watching videos and the keyboard is absolutely superb!

A hackable, programmable, customisable, unique phone that is so different from every other phone out there. A piece of phone history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good buy

Pros: works without a SIM card and really fast without service. I don't think you need a service with a phone like this! It's just like having a computer. I'm not really picky as long as I can use it. It came on time! My other phone wasn't functioning properly so the time I received it saved me.

Cons: It's a used phone for $99. I didn't expect it to be functioning like new. It came with extra batteries like seller said but only because it has trouble sustaining battery life and USB port came loose and fell out of phone when I pulled out USB cord on the day I got it. I couldn't really charge it through cord anyway because it wasn't detecting power through the cord. I have to change to a new charged battery three to four times in a day for the past two days I've had it.

There's also left over information from previous owner in the phone. I'm still trying to find a way to get rid of ALL of it. There's no Outbox or anything, at least, none that I know of yet.

Overall, I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing.
Reviewed in the United States on 31 January 2012
After reading all the great reviews, i decided to invest my $400+ on this phone. I received it yesterday January 27th from USPS and just after an hour, it indicated that the battery was low. I put it on charge and went out for 6 hours. I came back and the phone was still signalling that the battery is low. I decided to switch it off so that the charging can be effective and after an hour, i tried switching it on and it won't come on. Now i'm stuck with a new phone that cannot be switched on. Just for me to be sure i was not scammed, i checked the product information and the phone is made in Finland, the charger is made in China and the USB cord is made in Thailand. Isn't that fishy? I will take it to a nokia customer center for an evaluation. I hope they give me some good news else i will spread the bad news like a wild fire.
I had high hopes for this phone because i have always been a loyal customer of nokia phones but now i'm wondering as to whether i was scammed or that the phone isn't good after all. I can't say anything good or bad about the phone until i get some information from nokia. I'm happy for those who have had a good experience. I can't say the same thing. Sorry...............

Not a new item. Came with a DESTROYED battery that wouldn't charge, boot the phone, or fit in the phone because of the bubbling.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best devices ever made

Nokia was years ahead of the rest with this device and anybody who uses Debian would love it. It may not have many of the modern features and development is slower since this device has been discontinued but you will never find another device like it unless the upcoming Ubuntu phones gain traction. This phone takes a bit of know-how to tweak to perfection and if you have the ability then it is very much worth it.

Be warned though: all current development is community driven and Nokia has discontinued the device.
