I recently took the DC-11 on a winter camping trip to charge my Nokia 1661.

Never be without your phone. Charge your phone from this DC-11 (gives about one full charge) and charge the DC-11 from a main power source.

A great product that works.

This is a Nokia legacy product and therefore it has fallen to about a quarter of the original price. So, if it is suitable for your needs it represents good value for money. This extra power unit works with the following Nokia chargers AC-3, AC-4, AC-5, AC-8, DC-4, and DC-9. Despite being a legacy product it is an approved Nokia accessory for both the C2-01 and C3-01 phones which form part of their current (non-smartphone) range.

In essence this is a rechargeable battery with two (short) integral leads - one to fit the Nokia phones referred to above (and other older models that use the relevant chargers with 2mm sockets) whilst the other plug sports a micro USB plug. The DC-11 is charged by your Nokia phone charger providing it is one of those listed with the small jack type plug. The sealed internal battery is a 950ma unit and will recharge one item in an emergency, albeit, perhaps not fully. We have used it to recharge our Huwaei portable WiFi device which has a 1500ma battery - the Nokia DC11 did charge it from flat to give us about 2 hours life against the usual 5 hours.

This device is typically Nokia and is well made and finished in brushed aluminium. In terms of weight and size the DC-11 is about the same size and weight as a traditional "candy bar" phone. It has an LED which glows when it is being charged or charging a device. Although the surface mounted switch looks as though it could be switched on by accident, in practice, this doesn't seem to happen as it has to remain pressed for several seconds to work. Also, if no load is drawn the device switches off. The two leads are a precise length and fit flush into grooves on either side of the unit. There is no battery level indicator which is a pity although the LED goes out when the device is fully charged.

The unit takes about 2-3 hours to charge from your Nokia charger. You can also buy a Nokia USB lead to charge it but this will probably cost more than the DC-11 itself at current prices. It holds its charge for weeks and will then charge your compatible device on the go. The most obvious limitations are firstly, the power capacity of 950ma - it will get you going but most phones now have batteries that output 1500ma - 2300ma so it won't be a full charge. Secondly, you can only use the DC-11 once before recharging it, and, to do so you need your Nokia mains charger.

In summary, this device has its limitations in terms of capacity and compatibility plus it only works once before needing a recharge. However, it is neat, convenient to get you out of a jam, and, at its current legacy price you aren't staking much. If you own a suitable device that uses a compatible charger then the DC-11 might be worth having - it's a lot better than having a flat mobile battery on the hoof! It therefore has a qualified recommendation.

The Nokia DC-11 Extra Power Emergency Charger is an excellent product. Richard i had seen your review before ordering this product. I equally use Nokia N8 and its charging it as well as my Bluetooth BH609. I must say to Richard that Nokia has always n=been my best product and am ready to always try the product no matter how people criticize it. You have a nice review but i still think it should be an issue with the product specification you bought. Mine is original.

Good design but low power and recharging might be impractical if used while travelling

This is an efficient charger different to most others available in that it allows the charging of two phones simultaneously, ie one Nokia phone plus a second phone or other gadget) with a micro-USB socket. It's well-designed, compact, slim enough to fit in a pocket and the two charger cables slot around it sides so there are no untidy trailing cables.

However, it has also proven disappointing for my requirements. I use chargers such as these when travelling and need to recharge them on the move when I won't necessarily have access to a mains socket - and this is where this unit fails. It has only a low capacity, ie only sufficient to charge a phone once which is inadequate for my needs. Most other chargers tend to provide at least 1000mA or 2000mA - and often more at the price level for this unit. This DC11 unit can only be charged via an original Nokia phone charger (hence access to mains power is required) or, by spending extra, buying a USB cable from Nokia.

This is a good phone charger if you have access to mains power for recharging but if you don't, or if you need to charge your phone more than once, then it probably won't provide the power level you need. A more suitable alternative might be the Energizer XP1000 Portable Mobile Phone Charging Solution (Nokia/Samsung/LG) with up to 6 hours extra talk time (1000mAh) - Tip Fit Guarantee Portable Mobile Phone Charging Solution (1000mAh) or Energizer XP2000 Portable Mobile/Smartphone Charging Solution (iPhone/Blackberry/Samsung/HTC) with up to 12 hours extra talk time (2000 mAh) - Tip Fit Guarantee Portable Mobile/Smartphone Charging Solution (2000 mAh) which offer Nokia and micro USB connectors (amongst others) along with higher capacity allowing for more phone charges and for a significantly lower price.

Super little battery which gets round the problem of not being able to replace a battery in a smart phone.

I bought this item to charge my Nokia Phone N8 . It is listed as an accessory for that phone but it will not charge it. The product will charge other nokia devices like my BH105 blue tooth headset but not the phone. I would say that the device is working correctly just not up to the job as a back up device for my phone
