I installed it with the heat pipes facing away from the memory banks, that is with the long leg of the "C" over the memory.
The memory being used is 4x4GB of Corsair Vengeance low profile units. This left a gap of approximately 16mm between the memory and the cooler.
On trial runs out of case and without using any of the supplied speed limiters it was very quiet, however, the system has not been fully loaded as yet. The very limited testing I have carried out would seem to indicate that the cooling efficiency will be very good.
I reckon that to fit this unit whilst the motherboard was installed within a case wouldn't be to much of a problem when using an AMD platform, things may be rather different if using an Intel based system.
Anybody want some spare Intel installation bits for this cooler as I have a bag full!

Then there is the actual product itself, the build quality is excellent all around. I was gushing over the quality of the backplate (yes really) and the actual cooler itself is excellent too. The instructions were clear and easy to follow and they've added nice features like springs on the screw points so you can't over tighten it. It's easy to position it in any direction and the instructions show you the best orientations for cooling which is a nice touch. It comes with decent thermal paste too and more than you need so no pressure to get it right all at once.
In terms of cooling I was getting mid 20s on idle and no more than 50 under load on my pentium k. To top of it off the whole thing is virtually silent as I'm using it in my media machine in my living room.
One thing to note, I would install the ram first as this cooler covers over the ram area. Also extra height sticks may not fit, they may just but I would but in the standard height sticks for safety.
Overall I'm glad I went for this cooler as it fitted my requirements perfectly.
This is a big cooler, but fits snugly onto the Asus z97 gryphon armour mATX board. I did have to remove the mobo from the case in order to fit the backplate so it would be easier to install this when you initially build the system.
The install instructions are very specific and clear, but did not mention socket 1150 fitting. A quick email to Noctua support sorted this out though. Just follow the socket 1156 install instructions.
The Noctua support site has very good details of mobo compatibility too. I confess I didn't find this until after I received the cooler but it was fine (fortunately!)
I ran some idle and Max load tests before and after the install. The new cooler (with the fan running at below 1000rpm - pretty much undetectable from a sound perspective) under full CPU load manages to keep the CPU some 26 degrees centigrade cooler than the stock cooler (which by comparison was annoyingly loud under the same circumstances).
I would definitely recommend this product to serious system builders who want a high end CPU but don't like a
Lots of fan noise. Definitely worth the money.
The fan and heatsink have a nice and low height, which fits extremely comfortably in my Xigmatek Asgard case - which has a width of about 19-20cm.
The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is the trouble I had attaching the fan clips. Although everything I read online suggested that they would snap on easily, I had a little trouble getting them on (As I didn't want to snap anything by pressing too hard).
Although the price is quite high compared to other cooling options, I would recommend this if you are short on space in your case.
