Set in the heady years that followed the end of WW1, this is a story of the power of family ties, and the inner strength this gives two families, each of whom has to come to terms with an unexpected, tremendous loss, and learn how to move on from their grief. The personal battles of Clarrie and Wig, who faced a catastrophe that could so easily blight their lives, and some years later of Meg, who lost her much-loved parents in a tragic accident, to overcome their grief and build a new future are given an added difficulty by the machinations of a manipulative, resentful character, whose path has crossed those of both Clarrie and Meg.

I highly recommend this lovely, beautifully written story to everyone who enjoys reading sagas that draw them into the life of a family and grip them.

A hauntingly beautiful tale of strength and courage. The relationships between the female characters are sensitively written, but there is everything you could wish for in an intense, gripping story, love interest on various levels, dashed hopes and determination, jealousy and revenge, and the ethics of war in the years leading up to WW2. Set in Kent in 1920s and 30s, the historical background is perfectly pitched, and Tania Crosse takes the reader through the full spectrum of human emotion. This books goes far and way beyond what you would normally expect from a novel of this genre.
