It is not a wise decision to spoil such a great product with a nonsense omission. These are the best documentaries available regarding the WWII, to my knowledge. They are not the typical "winner-side" version, even though created by the BBC.

But it is unforgivable not to release it with subtitles, at least, in english. I wonder where were the "minds" behind that rationale.

In short: burn or give it away the stock without subtitles, invest just a little in adding the subtitles and release a worthy edition. You will sell lots of them, worldwide. I am a Spaniard, by the way.

So long...

I recently bought the BBC World War II boxed set of dvds for a gentleman with poor eyesight. There were many contributions from German speakers - which all had English subtitles, which this gentleman could not read (becuase of his eyesight). Does anyone know if this series has English translation subtitles please? I don't want to make the same mistake.

Remember the time that series was made and for whom. It was made for British TV and way back then nobody bothered with subtitles unless they were translating what a foreign person was saying on screen. Imagine what it would cost to have the whole thing subtitled now. Who would be supposed to pay for that ? The public would simply refuse to buy such an expensive documentary. And the few who wouldn't, would not be enough to break even.

bulkie - You are absolutely correct, of course, that the series was made for British television viewers in 1973 and it would have made no sense to have subtitles at the time. However, this series is now recognised the world over as one of the best World War II documentaries ever made. I live in Portugal where many of my Portuguese friends know the World at War as it aired on Portuguese TV in the 80s (with Portuguese subtitles).

Given the global appeal of this series, the digital technology available and the relatively low cost of commissioning English subtitles for English material (even given the size of the series), it would certainly have been worthwhile for the BBC or whoever released this boxset to have invested in providing English subtitles. It may have also been worthwhile to investigate buying back foreign subtitle translations done in the 80s and included them in this release.

I bought the Complete Series a few months ago expecting for there to be at least English subtitles. Fortunately for me I am English (and not hard of hearing) but my Portuguese girlfriend, even though she speaks English and was keen to watch the entire series is now much less interested as there are no English subtitles.

I would agree that this excellent series is lessened by not having subtitles. Good to point out that it was not done by the BBC though, but by independent television (ITV).

Bulkie is absolutely wrong. This documentary was one of the most expensive to produce in history. They could have afforded to add subtitles.

The blu ray has sub titles. It's worth the extra.
