I have to say the author has really excelled herself in her latest novel. It is extremely dark due to the nature of the story line and in more than a few places it sent chills through me.
Right from the very chilling start I knew this book was going to have me gripped and I wasn’t wrong. Through Katy the reader feels a real sense of fear. She is doing her best to try and move on from her past and make a new start for herself and her young son but she is forever looking over her shoulder.
Hamilton I liked how we actually get to know him better in this book. He is good at what he does and him and his team work well together. To a certain extent I think his working life is what keeps him going. I have to say I really warmed to him so much more throughout this novel and it made me have a whole new level of respect for him and for what he does.
It’s hard to say to much more about the story itself as not much is given away in the description so don’t want to spoil anything for anyone else by saying anymore.
No Safe Home in my opinion is the authors best novel to date. She is really making her mark in the crime/psychological thriller world. This book was full of chills and thrills that shocked and surprised me as the story unfolded. A great book and can not wait to read more in the series.
I loved both how the plot was woven together and the slow reveal of the past heartbreak of DI Hamilton. The characters were brought to life on the page and the author has a true knack of making you really care about them. The horrific subject of child murder was handled skilfully and not sensationalised nor too gory. No Safe Home is well written with lots of suspense and it actually got right under my skin leaving me reading with an underlying feeling of dread with each turn of the page, anxious for Katy and her son - now that is clever, clever writing!
Due to my impossible TBR list I broke my usual rule of starting with the first in every series of books and read this as a stand alone - it reads perfectly but was so good I now have to read the first book and hope that book 3 is imminent! - 5 big fat juicy stars
When the story begins following the prologue, you are moved into a timeline that initial had me wondering what had happened following the opening scene and what the ramifications were going to be. Yet, with the deft hand that only a skilled writer can possess, Tara manages to ensure that at no point are you not completely engaged with the events unfolding. Kathy's story is one of sadness and loneliness, working in a pub to provide for her son and to try and build a sense of normalcy in her life. Yet events from her past are destiny bound to return and haunt her, and when they do the pace never lets up for a second.
Introducing DI Hamilton via the investigation into a girl's death only adds to the sense of suspense and forbidding that litters the narrative at every turn.
Fulls of thrills and unexpected plot revelations, I found myself not wanting it to end.
This is one book not to be missed, alongside Tara'a excellent debut novel 'In The Shadows'. I cannot recommend it enough and cannot wait to read more from this lady who has become one of my favourite authors.
The story opens with a single mother whose home has been violated by a masked intruder and she fears for the life of her child. The prologue alone puts the fear of God into the reader and makes you question, how safe is anyone really, in their own home?
DI Hamilton and his team, although somewhat smaller than previous, after losing two of them due to personal circumstances are handed a case that has been dubbed the 'Bedroom Killer' after two separate incidents which it's becoming apparent are linked, and they are in a race to find the perpetrator before there is a third.
Even though this can be read as a standalone book, you get a better feel for the characters if you read In The Shadows first and you see a more personal side to DI Hamilton in this one when personal things from his past are revealed. We also get to meet Rocky, who is a young aspiring PC brought in to help the team try and crack the case while they are short staffed and he very quickly shows he's got what it takes, hopefully we will see more of him in the next book.
I was drawn into this book within minutes, Tara's style of writing grabs you and doesn't let you go, it's truly exceptional. I actually thought I'd guessed who the killer was at one point and have to say I was relieved to be wrong and shocked when it was revealed. There are many twists and turns in this book, which keeps you on the edge of your seat with your heart in your mouth and I can't wait to see what book three has to offer.
