Review

‘Brian Moore is a brilliant narrator. No Other Life is comprehensive, delicate and mysterious.’
Kate Kellaway, Observer

‘In this explosive book Moore brings a world pulsatingly to life, with vivid descriptive writing and a series of beautifully accurate vignettes.’
Anthony Curtis, Financial Times

‘No Other Life is tightly-made and absorbing. Brian Moore is a highly intelligent writer who has the enviable ability to make you want to go on turning the pages… this is a very exciting book.’
A. N. Wilson, Evening Standard

‘The profundity of this book is achieved with breathtaking lightness… Moore can push the reader’s mind against it’s own extremities.’
Laura Cumming, Guardian

‘Posed, bracing and moving… if pleasure indeed corrupts the soul, then this very novel is a twenty-four carat sin.’
Tom Adair, Independent

From the Back Cover

When Father Paul Michel, a missionary on the desperately poor Caribbean island of Ganae, rescues a little black boy, Jeannot, from abject poverty, he has little idea of the perilous and dramatic events the future holds in store. Jeannot becomes a revolutionary catholic priest and is subsequently elected president of a land previously accustomed only to despair and dictatorship. A brilliant messianic orator, Jeannot bravely urges his black brethren to rise against the forces determined to topple him. But is he a saint or a rabble-rouser? Even Father Paul can no longer be sure of his protégé's true motives…

This is a must-read novel. It details with particular poignancy the moral dilemmas of poverty in an impoverished state. A priest is seen as a 'Messiah' and rises to be president but at a cost. His friend and mentor Fr. Michel also faces the tug of friendship but of a restraining hand against too much impetuosity. In the end it comes to nothing in the public square but it is a story of moral courage and friendship. To me, this is one of the finest of Brian Mooore's novels.

I thought I'd be on a winner with Brian Moores' story. And I was right. It has been much enjoyed by someone who has been an enthusiastic reader of his works for a long while.
