I got a cheap (£5) 18650 charger off eBay as I just took the batteries at face value as being big batteries. Rookie mistake. Batteries such as 18650 and 26650s can be volatile and are dangerous if they overheat. Something I discovered about a month ago with the eBay charger.
I decided to play it safe and buy a branded charger. I hadn't heard of Nitecore before, and still being something of a novice, I looked on various vaping forums. Nitecore seemed to be a brand that kept being recommended by people more experienced than myself.
This will recharge any cylindrical rechargeable battery, from "domestic" AAA all the way up to 26650. Once each battery is charged the Nitecore will stop putting power into it so it will not overheat. There is an LED display that gives you the battery health, charging status, battery voltage, and charging time.
This will charge a variety of batteries, but so far I've only used it to charge AAA, AA, 18650 and 26650. It will do AAA in approx 30 minutes, AA approx 45 minutes, 18650 in approx 6 hours and 26650 in 8 hours. I've been using this daily for around a month now, and I've had no cause for concern.
This, and the purchase of some Eneloop Batteries https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LW3UM2K/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1, have completely changed my attitude to the use of rechargeable batteries. I didn't realise that there were now NiMH batteries that had virtually no memory and could retain a charge for years. I've unearthed quite a few old AAA rechargeablesI that have given up the ghost in phone handsets and this charger appears to have revived them successfully but I now intend to buy only Eneloop rechargeable AA and AAA batteries in future as I exhaust my stock of non rechargeable batteries. Good for the planet and good for the pocket.
Two of the best chargers on the market at the moment are the Nitecore D4 and the Xtar VC4. If you buy either you will have a great charger. On balance, I prefer the D4 for the extra battery types it supports, the clearer display and the fact that it uses a standard mains power connection.
Was OK - somethings batteries needed to be repositioned to get a contact but it worked.
Then one day stopped working.
Nitecore would not replace because I didn't validate it on purchase claiming it could be a fake and the reseller (SmashingDealsDirect) was a useful as a chocolate teapot in helping.
Ended up dumping in the bin and gone back to using my 5 year old basic EveryReady charger which doesn't have the fancy display but well works.
If all 4 slots are in use it can take a while but it’s not sold as a rapid charger.
Lots of information about the cells is provided.
One thing I noticed. I charged the Eneloop’s fully using an energiser charger. Once completed I then put them on the D4 to read the display. It then decided to add some extra charge so obviously the energiser wasn’t the most effective device.
It is probably ok for A batteries.
I suppose it was just bad luck, and presumably most examples have a decent length working-life, so I'm not going to trash it completely, but I have therefore returned it for a refund, and bought a similar priced equivalent from another manufacturer to see how I get on with that one instead
