Well, I was right. [Please read my U.S. Amazon review for that to make sense.] The Ninja Tune XX box set is a joyous, overdesigned, Ninjatune love epic to itself.
After scouring the world for a copy, failing to find one for resale under five hundred bucks on eBay, and resigning myself to a life without one, Ninjatune finally printed a second run - or released the units they held back in order to manipulate buyer anticipation plus stop the flow of whiny emails from me - and I bought one from them directly.
Whew. You should've seen my little face light up when this finally landed. Pathetic.
And yep, it's beautiful. Every NJ tragic should own one of these lavish, self-indulgent, eccentric, eclectic sets that include twelvety CDs and 45's and the LP's they send you as well because now you're also a VIP member plus the book and the well-lush accompanying brochure and the downloads and the lifesize ninjatune model. Oh, wait, no, the lifesize model is mine, built out of chewed-up bits of Amazon boxes stuck together. I said 'tragic' right?
The music? Beguiling and frustrating. There's a lot of good stuff in the mix, and it's not a retrospective so it's all pretty new, much of it messed about with. The NJ stable basically play in the same sandpit and like to decorate each others sandcastles and sandsculptures with shells and I think I'll just give up on that fairly lame metaphor when just saying 'remixed' would've been more than sufficient. I've been playing the first four cds on moderate rotation for the time I've had it, while I rarely check out five and six.
So, yeah, I could've just bought the two double cds and had the music I like. Regrets? None. I enjoyed reading the book, and it helped me catch up on NJ music I hadn't checked out before. Like I said, this is a love note to itself. Ninjatune, like Warp, occupies a crucial junction for western contemporary music that allows diverse musical strands to come together and - ahem - warp and weft and form a finer fabric.
Enough lame metaphors. If you're not familiar with the Ninja Tune label, I'd start with earlier retrospectives and compilations plus just buy everything DJ Food ever did. Jazzy knob-twiddling with sweeping cinematic aspects, hip-hop sensibilities, and a disinterest in commerce characterise those recordings, many of which I regard as essential.
Now, how can I get hold of a Warp Twentieth anniversary box set?
