Ninja Assassin follows Raizo (Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them, and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. Raizo saves Mika from her attackers, but he knows that the Clan will not rest until they are both eliminated. Now, entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse through the streets of Europe, Raizo and Mika must trust one another if they hope to survive, and finally bring down the elusive Ozunu Clan. Ninja Assassin stars Korean pop star Rain (Speed Racer) as the central character, Raizo; Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) as Europol researcher Mika Coretti; Ben Miles (V for Vendetta) as Europol Agent Ryan Maslow; legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi (Revenge of the Ninja) as the ruthless leader of the Ozunu Clan; and Rick Yune (Die Another Day) as Raizo’s rival, Takeshi.

Its not going to win any oscars and I fully understand that it wont be to everyones liking but I think its grossly unfair when people award 1 and 2 stars just because they failed to realise what the movie was about prior to watching it. My 5 stars may well be a little generous but I just wanted to balance the scales a little bit.
All I would say is that if you liked the scene in Kill Bill (volume 2 I think) when Uma chops limbs off left, right and centre in the restaurant then this is probably for you as the violence is not dissimilar although perhaps even a little more blood thirsty. As far as I am concerned its a good switch off movie to stick on when you've had a few beers and if thats you're kind of thing you'll love it, if you want something 'believable' then perhaps look elsewhere.
The film is very gory - delighting in over top, gushing blood, and limb and body part severing. In fact, the opening scene made both my flat mate and I jump out of our skins. In some ways in fact, this is almost some sort of martial arts horror; with the way the ninja hide in the dark and then pounce, delivering scares, and the afore mentioned gallons of blood.
Aside from the gore, Ninja Assassin is just an all out martial arts action. There is a lose sort of detective story and back story going on throughout the film, but really it's just all about the action - of which there's plenty, and which is pretty good too.
The fight scenes aren't outstanding technically, but they are dramatic and over the top in a sort of Hollywood way: with CGI effects used on weapons, and to create visually satisfying shots, splattering blood, and dramatic decapitations - that sort of thing. And as for the use of weapons, it's much more a martial arts film where steel is the focus as opposed to feet and fists, and the array of ninja weapons used are cool to watch.
Blu-Ray provides the perfect platform for all these effects. My copy was crisp, clean, and great to watch - giving you a chance to really take in all the effects and fights - even though a lot of them happened at night or in the dark. The colours were vibrant in the opening scene and in the monastery flashback scenes, and all in all, I think this format really compliments the film.
The acting leaves a lot to be desired but it's bearable.Read more ›
This movie is about a clan of ninjas who are trained from children for one reason, to become the ultimate assassins for hire.
Without spoiling it for you. . . .one of them escapes as he's sick of the life he's being forced to live but it's one of those once you're in you can never leave efforts! A bit like where I work :)
So, present day and he's an adult and still being chased down by the ninja clan he left! They never give up.The visual and audio CGI fest on bluray is brilliant. Whack your speakers up and prepare to duck, dive and dodge the hundreds of whizzing shurikens, Katanas, knives and Kurasigama (which he is rather tasty with!) and every other martial arts weapon you could ever think of! All great stuff indeed!
The speed and skill and stunts involved in the fight scenes and the number of combatants at any one time, ie-the bloke versus all the ninjas, is fantastic (in my opinion).
A great movie, you won't be dissapointed.
Director: James McTeigue

The Ozunu clan is abducting children and turning them into assassins, one of them is Raizo (Rain), who eventually turns his back on the clan, after some of his friends are murdered by the clan. He ends up not only being hunted by the vengeful Ozunu clan, but also by Europol investigators
Maslow (Ben Miles) and Mika (Naomie Harris), as he leaves a bloody trail through Berlin, Germany, closing in on his former sensei.
THE PROS & CONS
NINJA ASSASSIN is in my opinion a masterpiece in the ninja genre. A very Americanized ninja movie, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
Yes, it features unrealistic over the top CGI gore and splatter effects, but it works as long as you do not take it too seriously and enjoy it for what it is - a great action movie.
Never mind that most actors playing the ninjas are Korean or of Korean descent rather than Japanese, they all do a decent job. Rain as Raizo is pretty good, not an Oscar-worthy performance, but that's not what action movies are all about, now is it. His martial arts performance looks great however and I prefer seeing him than Iko Uwais in THE RAID.
British actress Naomie Harris does much better as Europol agent Mika. I also liked Ben Miles as Maslow, both agents give believable performances and are well-cast.
The fight choreography is superb and the fight scenes look amazing, so is the excellent cinematography by Karl Walter Lindenlaub, especially the scenes in the dojo.
NINJA ASSASSIN is the second film by director James McTeigue, whose debut was V FOR VENDETTA.Read more ›
