5.0 out of 5 stars It really does work, if you do it right 25 Feb. 2013

There's no such thing (yet) as a waterproofing spray that completely restores a jacket to like-new levels of performance, but this stuff comes darn close when applied correctly. The directions on the bottle are a good start, but for optimal results a little extra work is required:
I treated an aging snowboarding jacket with it, and the results have been very satisfactory. The biggest thing to remember is to RUB IT IN - once you spray this stuff on, work it into the fabric so that when it dries it stands a better chance of staying inside the fabric (instead of being worn off). I recommend using rubber gloves, because it will waterproof your hands. Once you're done (spray and rub in some extra in high-wear areas of your garment), throw it in the dryer for a few minutes on medium heat. This will both dry any remaining spray and help it take hold on the threads inside your garment.

Remember, this isn't magic spray - but it does work quite well when applied correctly. If your jacket is old and the factory-installed DWR coating is peeling off (or wasn't waterproof/water-resistant to begin with), all the Nikwax in the world wouldn't help. However, if all you're getting is a little seepage and your garments are still in good shape, grab a bottle of this and it'll make a huge difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Work great. Handwash to go further 19 April 2012

Once every few years I reapply this in a small bowl and waterproofing is restored. My thin cycling rain jersey must be 25 years old now and even that works fine again. I also use it on a 17 year old Dianese Cordura Motorcyle jacket and breathable waterproofs.

Machine wash in an upright washer needs the whole bottle. Hand wash is easy and needs only a cap full.

Note: We wash the garments with Tech Wash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely functional in returning material to a waterproof state 8 Dec. 2012

I used this in the hopes of reviving a Marmot Tamarack jacket to its' previous water repellent/proof state. After a few seasons of regular use the jacket seemed to need it and beyond that it looked and smelled like a nightmare. The inside smelled like a warm gym locker that held workout clothes for a troll and the outside had a real potpourri of odoriferous stains that brought back a number of memories. So, I gave it a double washing with Nikwax Tech Wash and then applied this stuff once immediately after washing while it was still wet (I just shook it out) and then again the next morning when it was dry. It absolutely works and works for much longer than a 30 minute deluge (I seen that another review said the waterproofing failed them at that point). Here is what I think might be happening - I believe people are using regular laundry detergent to wash items before applying this treatment. While not exactly scientific, the reason I think this is after I applied the water repellent I took a shower as I had the stuff on my hands and forearms (plus, I needed a shower). Regular, old Dial soap removed the coating off of me in a flash. It wasn't anything close to a fair fight. So, I believe that regular laundry detergent has similiar characteristics and whatever detergent stuff is left over in the garment after washing degrades the application of this water proofing. I've been in both significant, ice cold rain that lasted for hours and honest snowfall so far this year after applying the spray-on water repellent and it has and continues to hold up. I am now wearing my Tamarack over my 800 down jacket if that gives you any idea of my confidence in what this product did for my "waterproof" layer. All that said, I suspect the wash-in stuff is better.

5.0 out of 5 stars waterproof that works 1 Jan. 2013
By dn - Published on Amazon.com

I bought this because I didn't want to buy a new rain coat for an upcoming trip to the Pacific Northwest. Boy am I glad I used this - it indeed rained, and my raincoat was newly water repellent (hadn't been that way in years). Save yourself the hassle/expense of a buying new raingear and refresh your existing gear instead - it works! Instructions on bottle are easy to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this 9 Jan. 2013

If you need water proofing... buy this. I live in Oregon, my husband and I commute on bike. I have waterproof clothes I bought years ago for my husband and the water proofer wore off on them. I washed them in my front loader with this product and they are waterproof again. The bottle says they are environmentally friendly and non-toxic too which is what I was looking for. I washed shoes with it and also a tarp for a bunny cover outside. They all worked. I will buy this again.
