The ultimate sidekick: different mounts for different missions
Supported by a range of mounts, clips, and rods, the KeyMission 170 lets you keep your hands free wherever you venture. Nikon’s accessory mounts securely attach the camera to helmets, wrist straps, and even vehicles. Use the Vented Helmet Strap Mount AA-5 to get a skydiver’s-eye view of the earth, or a climber’s view of the summit. Go deep inside the barrel of a wave with the Surfboard Mount AA-9. Two supplied lens protectors, one for land and one for underwater use, keep the camera’s lens free from dust and shield it from flying grit. Wherever you go, the supplied, interchangeable EN-EL12 Li-ion battery will keep you shooting for extended periods of time, and additional back-up units may be purchased. And the camera accepts micro SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.
Dive into beauty: waterproof to 10 m without housing, and to 40 m with optional
With the KeyMission 170, you can dive into the jewelled beauty of a coral reef and capture striking images of the wonders around you. The camera is capable of descending to depths of 10 m without housing, and can reach an impressive 40 m when you dive with the optional Waterproof Case WP-AA1 attached4. Fit the supplied underwater lens protector during shallow dives to keep submarine grit away from the lens and enable sharply focused underwater footage. When you use the waterproof housing, the camera is still small and light enough to handle easily. Plus this case features an additional battery compartment for a second battery. The battery in the camera and the battery in the case work sequentially: when one runs out, the other takes over. Why stop the dive just because you need a fresh battery?
Sweeping 4K/UHD movies and ultra-high-speed Full HD video
Adventures happen in extreme definitions. Do them justice. The KeyMission 170 supports 4K/UHD3 video recording at 25/30 fps, and ultra-high-speed Full HD (1080) video recording at 120 fps, which allows for dramatic slow motion footage. It’s possible to capture high-quality stills whilst filming, and Nikon’s acclaimed electronic Vibration Reduction (e-VR) minimises the effect of camera shake for blur-free still and moving images. A wind noise reduction function allows you to reduce the sound that is produced when wind passes over the camera’s built-in stereo microphone during movie recording.
Ready for action: simple operation and shockproof, freezeproof, dustproof
The KeyMission 170 can handle the elements. The dustproof camera body is solid, lightweight, and shockproof from heights of up to 2 m. A protective outer shell ensures reliable operation even when the temperature is as low as -10 degrees Celsius. Both the shutter-release and video record buttons are easily accessible on the top of the camera. The 1.5 inch, 340 k-dot LCD monitor makes it simple to confirm camera settings, check compositions, or review images. And the supplied ML-L6 Bluetooth7 remote makes it easy to control the camera when it’s attached to a compatible mount: you can even operate this remote when wearing gloves. Whether you’re on the upper slopes of a mountain in sub-zero temperatures or travelling the Inca trail, you’ll get breathtaking results.

They were out of stock when I wanted one so I got all three Keymission models direct from Nikon (80/170/360).
Out of the three this model is the best other than a few minor points
1. Field of view cannot be changed from 170 degrees
2. The app is still a bit cranky (using Android) and the app only handles one device so if you have the 360 you have to unpair and pair devices.
Comes with a mount and Bluetooth remote with external USB charger.
The camera itself has a standard tripod mount with contacts on the base for the scuba case (without case with the provided square lens cover is good to 10m). The contacts feed a second battery in the underwater case, a unique feature.
It uses Bluetooth and WiFi but just using Bluetooth it can auto transfer pictures to your smartphone (not videos). The app can also geotag them using the Bluetooth link (if you don't want any of this set camera to airplane mode).
Copying full videos and photos via WiFi can be done but is slow due to size and 2.4ghz WiFi
Using the USB cable the images can be copied direct and Nikon even do a PC/MAC OS application (KeyMission 360/170 Utility)
Many examples of the cameras performance which includes 4K videos can be seen on YouTube including Nikon uploaded ones.
All pictures look good except for the 170 degree lens distortion.
So this is Nikon's attempt at an action type of GoPro and its a belting little camera. You get the camera, a flimsy remote control, 2 mounting bases, a USB charging cable, a battery, AC charging unit with UK plug. a lens protector for situations where there maybe dust or mud and a waterproof protector. The camera does not come with a MicroSD card, which it does need. It can also record with MicroSDHC and MicroSDXC. We bought a Toshiba 128GB card from Amazon for £23, which does the job brilliantly. The KeyMission 170 includes one rechargeable EN-EL 12 lithium-ion battery, which lasts about 60 minutes of 4K videoing. The screen on the back is a great addition and is highly visible. All the functions of the camera are designed to be used whilst wearing gloves, so everything is intuitive and relatively easy to press once you are used to it. In saying this, it not a chunky camera, it really is very small. The front is dominated by an enlarged lens 170 degree wide angled lens, which takes very clear and ultra high definition (4K) video and stills. As the other reviewer states, this is where Nikon excels compared to GoPro. The wide angle and HD pictures this camera produces are better than anything I have tested so far. The video recording is simply outstanding.
The other "sports/action" features of this camera are already described, but to remind the potential buyer, this camera can cope with extremes of temperatures, is shockproof, waterproof inside the supplied protective sleeve, with the lens mount on its also dustproof. The camera also has Snapbridge connectivity, which means it can be controlled via an IoS or Android App. Uploading photos via this bridge is also possible, so allowing instant downloading to Facebook. I used it to record action shots, with the camera strapped to my helmet. On playback the auto focus worked a treat, the video was very clear and detailed. Overall it produced good results. We then tested it at night. The results were not so good. Firstly, if you are trying to use this as a video camera, there is no zoom only auto focus. Using it inside the auto focus has a great deal of lag and the picture it produces is very noisy and pixelated. Whilst this is not designed to be used at night nor inside, the pictures were very disappointing. We did use it for a fireworks display and when it was put on a tripod a had bright light from the explosions, the pictures it produced were very good, but I now realise that this situation was the exception, it is not good for any type of night photography.
Overall this is small, almost bombproof, easy to use with lots of connectivity options. I cannot find anything I dislike about the camera, when used under normal conditions, ie when in use as a sports camera.. The images are it produces are better than the Go Pro camera's I have tested. If you try and use it as a still camera or video camera whilst inside and using artificial light, then the picture quality is very disappointing and the no zoom limitations become obvious..
Overall as a GoPro camera, to be used for action shots, its superior to a GoPro but for anything else it is less than impressive.
This is aimed at those with a need or desire to own a resilient, high performance device which can be used in pretty much every scenario and environment. Its expensive, but it is in line price-wise with its competitors and being from Nikon you have the reassurance of their expertise and knowledge about cameras.
So, whats in the box? You get the camera itself, remote control + battery, several mounting devices (there are ten available in total, but in the box you get a flat base mount, base adaptor, curved base mount), USB charger cable, rechargeable camera battery, AC charging adaptor and UK plug, lens protector and un underwater lens protector attachment. All this is more than you need to get started and everything is securely wrapped and packaged and feels good quality, with the exception of the remote control which feels like something you would get in a pound shop. I would have liked some sort of carry case for the camera but I guess this is where Nikon can make some extra money from accessories.
Before switching the camera on, you need to open the side door using the latch and insert the battery and the memory card (not supplied). The latch feels very secure and there is no danger of this popping open. Memory cards supported are: MicroSD, MicroSDHC and MicroSDXC.
Now, the camera. Its a very sleek, compact camera with a screen on the back. Its surprisingly light and fits in the palm of your hand. Whilst light, it also feels very well made and constructed of very high quality materials. The screen is actually quite easy to read, even though its only 1.5 inches in diameter, but I found the selector buttons a bit fiddly. Other Nikon models have a touchscreen facility but personally I prefer manual buttons. The fiddliness is a trade off for the compact size. Start-up is super quick and in under a second you are ready to go. This is great for catching those unexpected events and a real bonus. I was really really impressed by the picture quality of this device. Its 4K Ultra HD and it is simply amazing. THIS is where the NIKON excels over its rivals and their expertise shows. Its also got a 170 degree lens allowing you to record breathtaking scenery and panoramas with ease and without any adjustment. It records in 8.3MP which is just about right for this size of camera. You can take still shots which come out great, but this is obviously more of an action video recorder so its best to use it for this purpose. Movie or photo are easily selected by separate buttons so you know EXACTLY which mode you are selecting - no toggling between modes and missing out as you have selected the wrong mode by accident (happened to me several times using other cameras).
Other features of this camera are as follows:
SHOCKPROOF - tested by Nikon to withstand a drop from 6.6 feet
WATERPROOF - to 33 feet - amazing
FREEZEPROOF - to -10 degrees celsius (or 14 degrees F)
It is dustproof, sandproof and I really cant think of any environment you couldn't use this in
The absolute icing on the cake for me is the SNAPBRIDGE connectivity. This allows you to control the camera through an IoS or android app which is free to download. Pair your smartphone to the app and you can control all the main functions of the camera. This would prove especially useful if your remote got lost or the battery died. You can also upload or download any pics between the camera and your phone, so you could post images or footage onto Facebook or email them instantly. This is a fantastic feature and for me is one of the main selling points.
Overall: a simply amazing camera, packed with features and so easy to use. Its pretty much indestructible and will last several years and I would call this a brilliant investment if you like capturing action shots or underwater footage. Nikon have really thought long and hard about what you want and need in a camera such as this and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
