The description was a little off, as in there was no “bulk packaging (white box)” maybe a bit more wear than stated and a fairly noisy AF motor (which does scare more skittish wildlife)
But this IS a used lens, it’s not expensive, it’s clean (no dust or mould inside) and it does the job, so these are all just minor niggles.
I will get the brand new version, when I can justify the expense.
Update. I've done some internet searching regarding grey imports and I have to say that I don't feel quite so worried about the lens now.
However, I know I have to accept that it doesn't have a viable warranty.
Further update as at 10th May 2015. I used this lens today on a Nikon D70s to photograph animals. The results were stunning. On the
sports mode of the camera it returned lovely photographs of Llamas chasing each other. All perfectly in focus to the degree that I could print really large prints if I wanted to. Portrait type photos of dogs where I could count every individual whisker and eyelash. It is a brilliant lens.
FURTHER UPDATE AS AT 3RD JULY 2015. I now find that this lens will not function properly on my Nikon D70 for some reason. Takes a couple of photos OK and then goes haywire - searching for focus and not succeeding. Just to make sure of things I put the lens on my two other Nikon D70s and everything was fine. So, warning - if you want it for a Nikon D70 you might want to take care. There can't be anything wrong with the lens as such because it is working perfectly on the other cameras. I just need to be careful that I don't get the camera bodies mixed up.
The lense is very light, as is the camera body, but there is no sense of being out of balance and the camera feels easy to handle; for slower shutter speeds you might consider using a tripod - I shot between 1/160th and 1/200th and a 1/60th using flash with the VR turned off, so I don't know how helpful this might be, but as a rule I would normally shoot no slower than the focal length used and use good light or light the subject in poor lighting conditions. There is no macro facility on this lense and the closest focusing distance is just over a metre, so it is not a close-up lense, but does bring more distant subjects closer. A good test for this lense would be to shoot general scenes over a distance and then test for sharpness - I haven't done this yet, but from what I have done, I can see that colours are good, with good tonal definition and the pictures are quite sharp. Considering my shots were all taken at f5.6 which is wide open at 200mm, stopping down to f8 or f11 should improve the images, albeit reducing the light considerably. As a first impression, I regard this lense as a bit of a steal and a perfect addition to the basic kit, for what is relatively little money and good for anyone just starting out in DSLR photography. In terms of quality for cost, this is a 5 star purchase and you would have to pay a lot more to get much better. One issue I did encounter is that when close to the subject, if the camera fails to find focus, you need to focus away and return to the subject or else it becomes momentarily locked. I don't know why this happens, it is a slight negative, but not enough to lower the value of the lense overall.

The lens, for all intents and purposes, is identical to it's 'UK' counterpart that Jessops et al will gladly sell you for twice the price. So for me, it's a no brainer. Even if the warranty did end up being invalid, it was £100.
On to the lens itself, ok, it's not a high end number, but you won't find a much better made, cheaper lens that does the same job. The silent wave motor is just that, silent. Although it only stops down to 4-5.6, I find that adequate, especially if used in conjunction with a tripod. The lens doesn't necessarily make a good photograph, but this lens will be adequate for any budding amateur/starter photographer. The unit is well made, solid and feels well balanced with my D5100.
So, to the nay sayers, with no genuine reason to complain, get over it. It's a bargain, and you could buy two of these for the price of one UK version.
